The Story

Jake has suffered from cataracts. He has recently been diagnosed with cataract formation in the left eye. The doctors have determined that he will soon encounter the same diagnosis with his right eye within the next 6 months or so. By Spring of 2014 he will need an operation to correct his vision in both eyes for him to ever see again. With many years ahead of him, this surgery will greatly enhance his quality of life. Due to the cost of this surgery, I'm creating this page to defray some of the expenses to make this surgery possible.

Hello, Donna here!

I am very excited to let you all know that yesterday I scheduled Jake's Eye Surgery! Yes, there is a Date in sight! :) :)

We scheduled the surgery for May 5th. And I went over all the pre-op procedure with the assistant on the phone yesterday. She told me to bring Jake in on May 5th around 8:30am (this is eastern time just to let you all know), the doctor will take a quick look at him and make sure everything is up to par, and then we leave him there (I'm not too crazy about those last three words), but we leave him there all day for the bi-lateral cataract surgery and he has to stay over night (not too crazy about those last three words either), but he has to stay over night and he'll be good to go with a clear view of the world around him the next morning!

Thank you all for getting us, where we are, sooner than we expected (if we had to save the money up, this surgery would be prolonged for another year or two). It's YOU who is letting Jake seeing again on May 5th!

Where do I start.....
My first thought: 57 supporters on here helped Jake get to where he need to be and I thank each and everyone of you. He wouldn't of been able to see without you all....actually, he would of been able to see, but it wouldn't of happened for another year or more if we were to save up the money for it over time. But 57 supporters on here wanted Jake to see as much as I did and now he will be able to. :)

Let me answer a few questions that I've been getting in the past few weeks. Some have asked how old Jake is. He's 12, his birthday is January 10, 2002. Mellow little Capricorn :) The second question I've been getting from many have been "why wait for May for his surgery?" Great question. When Jake went to the eye doctors in September the eye doctor had told us that one eye (left) was already completely blind. The right eye has some vision left in it. The doctor has told us then that by waiting for May/June Jake would be completely blind in both eyes and the doctor would prefer to do the surgery then. Along the path of the last 6 months I see his vision deteriorated very quickly. Jake has about 20 percent vision left in his one remaining eye. By waiting for May, I can also request the days off I need from work to care for him, I can schedule and pay for surgery up front (which like any specialist, surgery date would be a few weeks out), and I can work with his primary veterinarian to make sure he is ready for surgery (another blood test). I'm sure he's fine, I'm just covering all bases as he gets ready for this surgery. I don't know any pet that has gone through this procedure, but I'm assured by his eye doctor specialist that he is a perfect candidate for this surgery because his blindness is only caused by Cataracts.

I can't wait to start the pre-operation procedures to get him on the road to seeing again. I thank you very much as I end this campaign this week and my promise to you is that I will pay my gratitude forward :)

I will be back to update this blog again to tell you all when his surgery date will be and when he goes for in for surgery.

Hi Pals!
I'm excited that we are now within 90 days of my surgery. My vision has (as expected) worsened. In the last few weeks I've been spooked by the leg of the dining room table (I swear it moved towards me and tried to attack me) and I walked into the edge (soft edge) of the sofa (who moved that sofa three inches to the left??)

Alot of things just look like shadows at this point. I can go up the stairs easily, but I have hard time going down the stairs (who put that extra step there??). When I get downstairs, I know exactly where to go to do my duties and then I can easily maneuver my way back to the stairs and back up stairs (I got the "stair counting" system perfected).

I'm still taking my Diclofenac ophthalmic eye drops faithfully everyday to prevent flare up and swelling of my one completely blind eye (once in the morning and once at night). I was told not to put it in the eye that is half blind, so I'm not. :)

"Sound" is still my best friend at this point. When Momma takes a picture of me, trust me, I'm not looking at the camera, I'm looking towards her wondering when she will stop making all that noise to get my attention. Geez.

I will continue to maintain the updates now as we get closer to surgery. I'm so very excited about this, as for Momma, she's a nervous wreck. The doctor was trying to explain to her that I would have to stay over night for one night at the eye doctor's veterinarian office (I thought "Ohhh, a vacation!"), Momma just looked around and said to him "Okay, then, I'll stage my sleeping bag over there for that night too!" Oh, boy, *rolls my eyes* this will be interesting.....stay tuned....
