The Story

Last summer, Hildy was running happily in the yard and spun around and snapped her leg.  She screamed and one of the other dogs attacked her.  Her foot hung loose and twisted as she moved.  She wound up with the bone protruding through the skin.  It was the most horrific thing I have ever witnessed.

The vet tried to repair is twice and I was told she needed to see and orthopedic vet.  After my conversation with her, we dicided that the best course of action was amputation.  She would not suffer any more pain and would heal faster.

Eight months later, I heard another scream from the yard, this time it was Belle.  She did not have the obvious signs of a broken leg so I thought she had pulled or sprained something.  Upon taking her to the U of I vet hospital it was discovered that she had in fact broken her femur.

After my experience with Hildy, I chose aputation as the first surgery rather than the third.  I'm happy to report that she is doing well but the bill for her surgery has hit me hard.

I decided to shut this down early.  There are others who need far more help than I do.  I want to thank everyone who donated.

Belle got her stitches out today,  The vet gave us a gel to put on her incision to help with some granulation tissue.  She said it looked like one stitch had maybe popped but there was good granulation there.  She said everything else was really healed well.

The vet also said to bring in a urine sample and she would check for a UTI to see if that is the reason for the peeing.  They would have taken a sample today but, for the first time ever when we walked into the vet's office Belle peed on the rug in front of the reception desk so there wasn't anything left!

We took a nap when we got home and she got to sleep in my room.  She likes just being a regular dog and not having to be in the pen.

Please keep Belle and Hildy in you thoughts that they stick around for a good long while.

Belle is still doing well.  Going to get stitches out tomorrow.  She has had one issue that concerns me.  She seems to be peeing while laying down.  Not sure what that is all about because she gets up to go outside and she potties while out there.

I will check with the vet tomorrow and maybe check for a UTI.

Please keep Belle in you thoughts and hope that this is not a setback for her.
