The Story

If you wish to donate directly via paypal: [email protected] (mark BE A HERO)

In early April twenty one dogs and cats have a chance to leave the horrors of Bosnia Herzegovina, to live in safety where they will know love, care, warmth and a full belly.

But they cannot go without your help. Can you be a hero to one of these lovelies, and help fund their way?

We have booked transports for early April. One transport will travel from Sarajevo to the United Kingdom. 12  dogs and 3 cats, all rescues, have fosters or forever homes waiting for them in the UK and Spain.

The other transport will take three dogs, Lana and Fluffy and King, and three cats, Sydney and Glee and Hope, all the way to Finland with Miska Oksanen.

The transport cost per dog or cat is around 400 euros. The preparation costs (all vaccinations, sterilisation, paperwork etc) are approximately 130 euros per dog or cat. If we manage to transport nineteen animals, the cost is well over ten thousand euros (and this doesn't include pension/kennel/food costs from now until they go...)

However, due to the generous support of Blind Dog Rescue UK, The Harmony Fund, the adopters of several of the animals and other individual donations, all we need is 3 900 Euros to cover all transportation and preparation costs, but we need it very soon.

Many of these dogs and cats have come through horrific suffering. Glee was deliberately blinded (she can now see a little out of one eye); Dennis nearly died of a botched castration in one of Bosnia Herzegovina’s infamous ‘shelters’; Faith was tortured with wire around her neck and leg, left to die from starvation or the infection from her terrible wounds. She was saved, she had to have her leg amputated however. Hero ,our special mascot for this fundraiser, is also a tripod. He was found on the streets, half-blind, with a suppurating fracture on his leg. All of these animals have a story to tell, and we want the ending of the story to be ‘and they lived happily ever after.’

Please help, any amount, no matter how small is much appreciated.

The dogs and cats who are are booked on the trip are:

Dennis, Nova, Mama Puppy, Bubi, Fikret, Hero, Nodi, Harpo, Faith, Fiona, Ginger, Velvet, Black Jack, Fluffy, Lana, Glee, Sidney, Basil, Hope, King, Lucia

If you think you can offer a home to another dog or cat, please contact us at [email protected] and visit our adoption page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/AdoptionAnimalsBosnia(there are several dogs/cats looking for homes who are not yet listed here)

Just to let you know we've uploaded the video of Hero and Vasko in their new home in the UK -- and will be uploading more as they come in!

AS MOST OF YOU KNOW, OUR TRANSPORT OF DOGS OUT OF BOSNIA HAS SAFELY DELIVERED 14 RESCUES TO THEIR FOREVER AND FOSTER HOMES. (Sadly Ginger the cat could not make it on the transport as she was too ill.)

There were many difficulties but we got there in the end! There are so many people to thank but especially to all of you who donated to help and who sponsored places for fosters and also those who supported with your encouragement throughout.

THANK YOU!

Here is a YouTube of Hero in his new home with his new little friend Flash:

If Miska is successful in taking 4 rescues to Finland next week, we will have saved 25 rescues in total with the Be Their Hero fundraiser !

We are getting so close to our goal! Thank you everyone!

As you know Faith and Harpo (Harpa...) are booked on the April transport to the UK. But their new foster home may not be ready for them by then. (This is a special foster, someone who is able to socialize traumatised dogs.)

So, we desperately need a back up plan...someone to look after them until everything is sorted. They don't have to go to the same home, but we don't know how long the temporary home will be needed for right now, 2 weeks perhaps, possibly three.

Both these dogs have been severely traumatised and need very special care. Faith as you know was found tortured with wire around her neck and leg, and she lost the leg. Harpa has always been very shy and afraid and timid ever since she was found on the streets, she has lost her trust (if she ever had it) in people.

Faith's story is here: http://inmemoryofvucko.org/2014/01/21/dog-tortured-in-bosnia-herzegovina/

If you can help, please email [email protected]

Thank you!
