The Story

Hola,

I am a Puerto Rican living in Austin, Texas and I am seeking help for my hometown of Morovis to recover from the damages caused by hurricane María. Morovis is a rural town in the center of the island, its population totals about 32,000 people.

The center of the island was one of the areas most affected by the hurricane. I’ve been in touch sporadically with my family and friends, and the stories they tell are heartbreaking.

It’s been more 27 days since the hurricane hit the island, and although help is arriving in Puerto Rico, it is not making its way to the towns in the center of the island. There's no power, no water, and minimal communication. The forecast is disheartening, the government estimates that most towns will be without water and power for months. The holidays will arrive, the year will end and people in PR might still be in the dark.

As a Puerto Rican and a Moroveña, I can't let another day go by without doing something for my people. My goal is to collect $4,500 so I can send 50 solar rechargeable lanterns and 50 water filtration kits to Morovis. These items will aid people while they wait for services to be restored.

Thank you for your help!

Hola amigos,
I just returned from my trip to Morovis, PR. With the help of family and friends, we distributed the solar lanterns and water filters in my town. Please go to the link below to see some images of the trip. https://photos.app.goo.gl/oF99cF5Wiz5FLI1j2

It was gratifying to see the happiness on people’s faces when they received these items. It was also relieving to see that groups of volunteers continue to visit the neighborhoods and provide food and supplies.
On the other hand, it was very sad and frustrating to see the conditions of the town. To this day, there are still piles of debris on the sides of the roads, power poles and cables on the ground, people who lost their roofs are still waiting for FEMA’s blue tarps, businesses are not fully operating yet.
75 days after the hurricane, Morovis is still without power and the water service is completely unreliable. The local newspaper published this article yesterday.

There is a lot of work ahead to be able to get back to normal. The much needed repairs are taking way too long. At this point, people have gone above and beyond to survive and provide for their families. Volunteers continue to do a great job. But what's needed the most is out of our hands.
This is why I kindly ask you all to contact your U.S. government representative and ask them to take action now to facilitate the recovery and relief efforts.   To find them, you can follow this link:https://www.callmycongress.com/
I appreciate all the support given to this campaign.

Hi everybody,

We're only 20% away from reaching the goal.

So far, we've purchased, delivered and started to distribute more than half of these lanterns and filters. Today I'll receive 12 additional filters that I'll be delivering personally to Morovis next week.

Please help! Don't forget about the people in PR.
