The Story

This is the Herbal Aid Page for Hurricane Harvey.  We are organizing herbalists and supplies from New Orleans to Austin to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.  Please note that we are in the middle of this event. We have no idea what is to come. We are just starting to dry out west of Houston, but more may be coming. Remember, there has been no services for days in some areas, no food deliveries, no clean water. We are preemptively beginning to organize groups to go do herbal support as soon as it's safe to get in. Please check back here for updates as we get more information. Currently we are raising money for the efforts to get to people that are stuck, and first aid supplies, and herbs.  We will soon be graciously accepting herbs when we get more information as to what is needed.  Check back here, more information posted soon.

Who am I? My name is Nicole Telkes I am the Founder and Director of the Wildflower School of Botanical Medicine. I helped found a local chapter of Herbalists Without Borders here in Texas.  I began doing herbal first aid work in the late 1990s and have continued to assist both with street first aid and disaster relief.  As someone who was on the ground during the relief efforts of Katrina, we are organizing to assist with this effort as well.  We will be organizing with herbalists like Jen Stovall of Maypop Herb Shop in New Orleans, Amy Kreydin of the Barefoot Dragonfly in Austin and many other local herbalists as well as grassroots medics in Houston.  Any money raised that is not used will go directly into local grassroots efforts, especially of underserved areas of the gulf coast or directly to families that have lost their homes.

We had a great meeting today with about 15 people from the Wildflower Herbalists Without Borders Group to organize  herbal assistance in the Central Texas area.  We are working to organize food as medicine assistance with local farms to bring high quality food into Houston this weekend. One herbal first aid clinic began in North Houston today.  Another herbal first aid clinic begins in Austin to support those evacuated from Port Arthur and another will begin in South Houston next week as a bilingual offering.  We have a clinic point person now in Houston for us to communicate with for those of us outside of the area and we are getting together some initial lists of needs.   Thank you so much for your support.

Hello, today was a very successful trip to Houston with nurbalist Annee Feindel Wainwright We were sharing the same stretch of highway with emergency relief workers on the way there. 71 and i10 and 290 were all very passable. What isn't are neighborhoods off of highways. We were incredibly lucky and able to get places easily, as water had just receded that day from one of the areas. Currently, we have 2 potential staging locations so far for clinics. One is southwest nearer to downtown at the Holy Ghost church. This herb clinic requires bilingual(spanish/english) herbalists or bringing someone who is bilingual there. They wanted us to start tonight, but we had to check out other locations. The other location is far North near the airport on Ella Road at an apartment complex that's been cut off from help for a week. There is an amazing herbalist there Mary Ayodele who is happy to host and run a neighborhood clinic and has a safe house. Mary and her neifhbors have been hit very hard by this. We dropped our initial load of basic supplies off with her.
Organizing for these clinics and more will be happening Sat. One of the biggest needs right now is someone with a car in Houston asap, as 3 herbalists we spoke to in the city are all without one and so we need to bring supplies to them to be used. We will be checking in with others and then offering a list that may grow and change as things develop. If you want to help this way and bounce around bringing supplies please let us know. One of my biggest hopes is to connect people to each other in Houston, and support the community however they feel they need the support. We will also be working in our own communities to assist those that need help. Please remember everyone, this is very early on.and we are constantly evolving and shifting as needed. Thanks so much more to come soon.
