Pastor Bud hasn’t had a sabbatical in his 25+ years of ministry.
In 2011, the Stockton Covenant (StoCo) Leadership Council decided to make pastoral staff eligible for a sabbatical after six years of employment. Pastor Bud completed his sixth year of ministry in June 2016, and now it’s time for him to go on sabbatical.
While Bud designed his sabbatical so that he and Kara could afford to pay all expenses out-of-pocket, .
From the opening verses of Genesis 2, to the ten commandments in Exodus 20, to the instructions in Leviticus 25 about Sabbaths every seven and fifty years, the Bible makes clear God’s work/rest design for creation. These and other scriptural references provide a foundation for periodic rest and renewal for all people, and especially for pastors.
Pastor Bud’s sabbatical goals were designed specifically for his needs, and are consistent with expert perspectives and the direction of StoCo. Beyond relaxation, rest and his 30th wedding anniversary trip, he will focus on:
- spiritual direction, renewal and revival;
- leadership development;
- multi-cultural and Hispanic ministry; and
- connections within the Covenant at the ECC annual meeting in Minnesota.
There will be regular updates during his sabbatical with the Leadership Council and the congregation, and re-integration times with the church when he returns.
