The Inter-Faith Council of Chapel Hill and Carrboro has adopted a powerful and effective model for working with individuals or families transitioning out of homelessness. Called Support Circles, this effort brings together a group of volunteers for a one-year commitment to work with a partner. The goal is to create a small community that can build relationships and weave a net of connection and support for one family in a sustained, and hopefully transformative, way. Many of you probably have similar circles of support to draw on -- family and friends to lean on in small and sometimes significant ways. Support Circles strive to intentionally create just such a circle for one family.
Six women, previously strangers except for two of us, have formed a new Circle. We are volunteers and have participated in IFC’s thoughtful training. Our partner family has applied and been accepted to be part of the partnership. We are currently in the process of meeting her and her children. Over the coming year, we will meet regularly and stay connected to lend an ear, be attentive during difficult times and celebrate accomplishments.
IFC’s model includes raising $2500 to support our Support Circle’s effort, $1000 to underwrite the staff time involved in training and coordinating our group and $1500 to have available as an emergency fund for targeted, important moments when money might make the difference in moving this family forward. The funds may not be needed. If they are not, they will be rolled forward to the next Support Circle that IFC forms.
