The Story

This fund is to provide immediate relief for those most affected by the Oakland Fire who are not eligible for any other source of immediate relief. We are a group of individuals who all lost friends and loved ones in the fire, and we have been connecting those in our community most in need with resources being offered and funds being raised. Since the Red Cross only takes care of biological family or legal partners of the deceased or the displaced, and The Gray Area Fund is for future long term support, we are one of a small number of groups doing this work and taking care of people affected who do not have their own individual fundraisers. People lost roomates who can no longer pay for rent. People have been taking unpaid time off from work to grieve. People who survived the fire or lost loved ones need therapy and other healing services now. People have been flying in from out of town to attend memorials. We have been hosting memorials at our houses, feeding and housing out of town friends, giving each other free health care and other goods and services. This is a community that was already financially vulnerable, that was struggling to make ends meet before this terrible tragedy. Our group has already been taking care of those in our community through other fundraisers, and there is a lot more work to do. Your donations will immediately help people struggling in this community.

Fundraiser Updates

Thank you again to all who have generously donated to the Immediate Oakland Fire Relief Fund. As this fundraiser has been successful, exponentially surpassing our original goal of $10,000, we're sharing this update to provide transparency as to how and where our funds have been distributed thus far. When we began our fundraising efforts, just days after the fire, we had no idea how great the support we would receive and be able to pass on would be. We started organizing a list of the 36 people that passed away, and those we knew that had survived. Between the five us, we knew many of the people affected, and for those we did not, a community-based vetting process quickly filled in the gaps. As our fund grew and became well-known in our extensive community, more and more people in need have been reaching out to us. All of our financial allocations have been need-based. As of February 19th, 2017, we have distributed $68,513 to 95 different people. We've been able to support legal and chosen family members, survivors, partners, roommates who've needed rent covered, close friends who lost wages for time taken off to grieve, and more. We have helped cover the costs of memorials, travel to memorials, costs associated with self-care - such as therapy - in the wake of this tragedy, and some relocation costs of those evicted from warehouse spaces immediately after the fire. We are so grateful for all the donations that have allowed us to do this work. Please continue to support this fundraiser and share it with more people as we currently have requests beyond our funds.

As of Thursday, December 29, 2016, our group has distributed the entirety of the $43,967 raised so far to over 50 different individuals and households affected by the fire. We have been prioritizing families, survivors, roommates, partners, memorial organizers, qpoc and other intersectionally vulnerable individuals. We have helped everyone that has come to us looking for help and every single one of those people has been deserving. We cannot express how humbled we are to receive the support we have from both inside and outside the community, near and far. And how healing it has been to pass this support along to those who need it. Thank you, every single one of you, who has donated. Please keep donating, as the requests have been pouring in as steadily as the support.

With love and solidarity,

Thank you everyone for your compassion and generosity. There has been an immense and humbling amount of support received and we are so forever grateful. It has been an inspiring experience to realize how strong and resilient our community and chosen family is in the face of devastation.

We have raised an amazing amount of donations, and yet all of the money we have collected is accounted for and we are receiving even more requests daily for immediate assistance. This for us exemplifies what a state of emergency we are truly in and how important it is for us to help each other. The funds are being distributed first to families and survivors who have yet to receive support from the Red Cross, and then partners, roommates, and community members who need assistance in regards to physical health, mental health, housing, unpaid time off of work, emergencies, and other care services. We are attempting to reach our network as widely as possible and are working endlessly to be immediately helpful and accountable. The total amount of assistance requested of us so far is greater than the amount we have raised, and we are stressing our need for continued donations.

This outpouring of support shows how much love, strength, and light we are able to provide in the wake of deep tragedy. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and held us in your hearts during these last few weeks.

With so much love,
Sharmi, Jaime, Sinuba, Natalee, and Claire
