The Story

Hi, my name is Taylor Smith and I am now a senior at Westfield High School and my passion for music and the marching arts is even stronger than before. Thank you for the tremendous support you gave me as I pursued my DCI dream last summer! My first year was amazing and when they say it changes your life... it's all true, and my life is forever changed for the better. I worked harder than I could have ever imagined and I loved (nearly) every minute of it. I certainly would not trade the experience for anything. It also confirmed this is exactly what I am destined to do somewhere in my future. I am very excited to begin my 2nd summer with the Blue Stars, but I am also looking forward to beginning my next big life chapter at Ball State University next fall. I will be studying Music Education and taking as many composition classes as time allows. This past trimester I was a Student Mentor for the 8th grade Wind Ensemble and I loved it... I was helping to teach other music students and learning what is needed to inspire them to practice and love music. I had a blast and loved spending time with one of my favorite music teachers, Sarah Rivers.

As many of you know, the Blue Stars are part of Drum Corps International, and DCI is the equivalent of the “Pros” for the marching arts. The Blue Stars have been competing as a World Class organization for over 50 years. I am thrilled that I have earned a spot with this amazing organization and can't wait for my 80 days of band camp again this summer. Another huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated through this site and personally to help me accomplish my goals. As a part of the Blue Stars, I have the opportunity to work with some of the best instructors in the world, as well as travel nearly 10,000 and perform over 30 times across the USA. I will be playing euphonium again this summer and working alongside others who have the same passion and desire for excellence. I love the professionalism in DCI, the team & family culture, and the idea of learning something new every day. I now understand this opportunity is also preparing me for my future in music education and helping me connect to those who I might someday work for and work with in the amazing world of music. Being a part of the Blue Stars Drum Corps and DCI provides remarkable experiences to help me prepare me for my future in music, performance and education. I have already had the chance to create relationships that will advance my world of music to even broader areas.

I have loved music ever since I can remember and have been playing baritone & euphonium for 7 years, and my goal to grow as a musician and teacher continues. It's hard to believe I have finished my last season with the Shamrock Pride Marching Band, however I have no regrets and will love my band family always. I have decided to try a few new things during my senior year; I will be participating in the TNL (Thursday Night Live) talent show and hopefully the WHS American Pie event in the spring. I am also going to try out for the spring musical "Guys & Dolls" and put my hat in the ring for other fun WHS activities. It's all still music, but I'm definitely trying to stretch a little more this year. I will be participating in the Ball State Honor Band and the IMEA Honor Band later this winter. I will still be participating in the ISSMA solo & ensemble competitions, regional & state honor bands, and symphonic band at WHS.

I am so grateful my parents support all of my dreams and activities, however I want and need to contribute to the costs involved. Of course all great opportunities have expenses, and again I am asking for your support in pursuing my goals and dreams. My Blue Stars participation involves tuition fees to the corps for their expense to train me, support and care for me all summer, as well as expenses for essential items such as athletic shoes & clothing, performance gear and minor travel expenses. If you can provide any level of financial support, even $5-$10, it would be greatly appreciated! Even more importantly, please come out to see us perform this summer between June 5th and August 13th and support DCI. I will post a detailed schedule later this spring. I also promise to keep everyone updated on how my summer is going and I want to thank you in advance for your encouragement, cheers and prayers for my journey.

Thank you for everything!

Taylor

Update by Mom....

After an awesome Rookie season during the summer of 2015, Taylor is ready for his 2nd year with the Blue Stars. He auditioned on November 20th and received a contract! So much excitement this year; new horn from Yamaha (this is a very big deal) and new uniforms for the corps. We can hardly wait to learn what show and music the Blue Stars will be performing this year.

In the few short months between the end of summer tour and auditions, Taylor was accepted at several colleges and intends to attend Ball State University. We have made several visits and met with professors and it is just a great fit for Taylor and aspirations for the future. It is a wonderful feeling to see your child happy and clearly on the right path. I still have worries for this man/child of mine, but they pale in comparison to the confidence I have for his future. Taylor also chose to pass on Winter Guard this year and opted to work at Old Navy to contribute to his fees and expenses. He is also tutoring math students and helping as a music mentor with the 8th grade Wind Ensemble. He is truly enjoying his senior year!

170 days until he's gone for the summer again....

Taylor leaves for DCI in 7 days! He has been working hard on Blue Stars music & marching assignments, along with preparing to leave school 8 days early... true dedication. AP finals done, two concerts left, lots of packing to do, and some fun time with friends before he goes. Thanks to all who have supported his dream and this life changing opportunity. If you'd like to help Taylor, he still has expenses before camp begins next week... all donations, encouraging words & positive thoughts greatly appreciated!

I have been working hard these past few months; attending winter camps with the Blue Stars, conditioning and completing weekly assignments for music & movement.  I leave for my summer tour exactly 30 days from today, which includes taking early finals & leaving WHS 7 days early.  Our show this year is titled "Side Show" and I love working on the challenging music and looking forward to learning the show drill.  This weekend is our last camp before the official season and the warmer weather will be a great asset.
Thank you to everyone who has donated both here and to me personally.  I truly appreciate your support and encouragement!  I hope you can attend a DCI show this summer or take advantage of DCI in local theaters, or just keep me in your thought & prayers.  I am so lucky & blessed to have this amazing opportunity.

Thanks again,
Taylor
