I'm Michelle and I am a recent high school graduate about to embark on an opportunity of a lifetime - a gap year to volunteer abroad in Lima, Peru!
The organization I am volunteering with is called Building Dignity, a non-profit based in St. Paul, Minnesota and operates through the Center for Developement with Dignity in Lima, Peru. I assist with the organization's leadership, music and educational programming. Building Dignityis an Omprakash Partner located in La Encantada in the southern part of Lima, Peru. Formerly a shanty town, La Encantada has faced many challenges, particularly with respect to infrastructure. Building Dignity's mission is to “enhance educational opportunities, train local leaders, and support neighborhood-led development in marginalized communities.” The specific community that Building Dignityworks with is highly underemployed and poorly educated. Currently, they are seeking more volunteers to provide educational services and help with the development of their Leadership Academy. How did I learn about this amazing opportunity, you ask?I learned a plethora of information about volunteering abroad via the Omprakash Foundation. Omprakash is a non-profit organization that, "connects grassroots health, education, and environmental organizations in over 30 countries with a global audience of volunteers, donors, and classrooms that can learn from and support their work." Omprakash also believes that cost should not be burdensome for individuals who wish to volunteer abroad. I am honored to say that I received an Omprakash Volunteer Grant; however, there are still some expenses that I need help with. Finances are a hardship for my family and a donation of any amount will be appreciated immensely. All donations will contribute to paying for travel and living expenses. This includes housing, public transportation, food/water, toiletries, etc. If you would like to follow my travels feel free to check out my blog Notas de Peru (www.notasdeperu.wordpress.com) and my blogon Omprakash!Thank you for your support!
