Jessie's family and friends are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and contributions that so many have made already in remembrance of Jessie. A total of over $25,000 has been raised for the Sean Casey Animal Rescue organization through donations made on this page, our Facebook page and by mail, and will be sent to them soon.
From now on, however, the family would like to have any additional contributions in Jessie's honor directed to the Jessie Streich-Kest Scholarship fund which has been established by her colleagues at the Bushwick School for Social Justice, where Jessie started her career as a 10th grade Special Ed teacher just this past September. You can continue to donate here or send checks to the address below, but from November 9th on, all the funds raised will go to the scholarship fund.
Here is what the school wrote in describing the establishment of the scholarship fund, which will go to assist a deserving senior each year:
"Jessie Streich-Kest was a kind, optimistic, determined, and hard working young teacher who lost her life in a tragic accident during Hurricane Sandy. She was a tireless advocate for her students and worked long hours to ensure that their academic and emotional needs were met. Jessie's work at BSSJ was only a small part of the impact she had on the world. She touched many lives with her advocacy for animal rights and social justice. Jessie was a fierce warrior for fairness, equality and positive change. Her short time at BSSJ proved to all around her how much of an impact one person can make.
"Her deep impact on the BSSJ community will endure, and her presence is greatly missed.
"This scholarship goes to the student who most exemplifies the spirit of Jessie Streich-Kest in their perseverance, kindness towards others, and deep commitment to justice."
