On Monday, April 28 at 5:30 PM, Carry On Records’ artist Marykathryn Sullivant will release her inspirational song “Scars” to friends, family and the public. Marykathryn’s song is a reflection of her inspiring attitude, her courage, and her incredible journey which she captured with Carry On Records as a part of her healing process.
In August 2013, Marykathryn was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive ameloblastoma tumor just two days before leaving to start her new college life. In October, she underwent surgery to remove her left jaw, which was rebuilt by transplanting the fibula bone from her left leg.
At the end of December, she worked with the song writing dream-team of Billy Dawson, Cathy Majeski, and Brandon Jones to craft her story into the song “Scars” from the journal she kept as part of the Carry-On Records process. The following week, she was joined in the studio by her amazing team of musicians, family, friends and one of her surgeons, who also played a guitar track on her song. Miraculously, despite having her jaw removed only 8 weeks before, Marykathryn took her experience and made something beautiful out of it.
Her celebrity song-writing team volunteered their time and expertise to help Marykathryn develop a hit song! Billy Dawson, who co-penned “Born To Lead,” for the iconic Lombardi awards as an inspirational anthem that motivates followers to become leaders. Dawson, a multi-talented singer, entertainer, author and writer and has shared the stage with artists including Lady Antebellum, One Republic, John Hiatt, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Skillet, Five For Fighting, Colt Ford, Charlie Louvin and Cross Canadian Ragweed. Cathy Majeski has written for notable recording artists including Reba McEntire, Trace Adkins, Lorrie Morgan, Wynona Judd, Ricochet, SHeDAISY and Tanya Tucker.
“Scars” is an incredible commentary on finding “perfection” as a “new work of art” in her scars! It is destined to become an anthem of inner strength, creativity, resiliency, beauty and encouragement for every person who has ever experienced trauma, fear and the scars of survival.
Carry On Records is partnering with Music City Pizza to celebrate Marykathryn’s song release and to further the life changing work of Carry On Records. This celebration will help raise funds for Marykathryn’s family and will bring awareness to Carry On Records. Marykathryn is scheduled for another major surgery to reconstruct her jaw in May. This release will serve to guide her through the remaining challenges and recovery.
Carry on Records was started in July 2013 by four friends living in Nashville. The idea came as a way to honor those who have lost their lives to cancer and to give those going through treatment an opportunity to have a creative outlet to work through their experience by writing and recording their own music in a professional studio.
Studies have shown that music aids in the recovery process and is therapeutic for those going through treatment. It also gives patients something to look forward to, to express themselves and to help take their minds off of their current health problems.
Carry On Records’ methods were developed to give the patient an opportunity to partner with a songwriter/artist to write the music and to record the resulting song in a full-service, professional recording studio, ultimately producing a song from their own experiences. Proceeds raised during this process and from the sale of their song go towards the patient’s medical expenses.
