The Story

Update: Several supporters have urged us to keep this fundraiser open throughout 2015. After thinking about it for a couple days, we decided we would. Thank you all for your support and encouragement!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our nephew was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. When that happened, we decided to do things that support our deployed troops and let them know that they are appreciated and remembered..

We have also supported the “Cup of Joe for a Joe” project in a small way over the past few years. It is a  way to say “thanks” to our deployed US troops by having a premium coffee delivered into the hands of a grateful service member overseas. When the “Cup of Joe” project sent me information about collecting for a group donation, I had to say yes!

Sometimes, they write a thank-you note. Here is one of the thank-you notes we received. (I removed the soldier’s name for her privacy):

Mr. and Mrs. Noland, Thank you for your kind words and the COJ. We are doing great things in Afghanistan and will be back home soon! Take care, 1LT M---- R------, US Army

We are supporting the Cup of Joe for a Joe project until the end of 2014.

I hope that, as a group, we can provide at least 3,000 deployed troops with coffee by the end of the year. I hope that we can make a significant portion of that contribution by Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

Will you please help us meet our goal of 3,000 cups of coffee? Our group will be a little different than other groups in that we don’t work at the same place, we don’t worship at the same place, we don’t go to the same school, but are united for this common purpose, and are contributing as a group.

Each cup is $2. Please contribute $2, $20, $100, $1,000 – whatever you feel you’d like to contribute to this project to help our service members know they are not forgotten and that we appreciate the sacrifices they make for us every day just for being there.

Thank you for supporting our troops in this way!

Have you heard of Wreaths Across America? It is an event carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies on a specified Saturday each December at veteran's cemeteries in all 50 states. In 2014 it was last Saturday.

Here is Jim's nephew Grant's marker. Jim's son Bryan and Bryan's mom attended the ceremony and Bryan was allowed to place the wreath on his cousin's site. Bryan and his mom decorated by adding the soldier.

Grant was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010. We are raising money to buy coffee for deployed troops as a way to honor them and let them know they are not forgotten by those of us at home.

Our group fundraiser ends at the end of the month, but there is still time to contribute and buy some coffee for our deployed troops. We set a goal of $6,000 earlier in the year, and we are about $1,200 now. I do not see how we can meet the original goal by year's end, but we are pleased to have already provided coffees for around 600 deployed troops so far.

I have a friend who will match any donation made this month, so your money will go twice as far. You can use the link on the right side of the page to make your contribution. We send the funds as they come in so that there is no delay. That also means that you can get coffees to troops in time for Christmas.

We usually receive a note in return saying where the coffee was provided and a note from the recipient. Usually the notes just say "thank you" or "thanks", but sometimes they write a little more in which they say how much they appreciate being thought of by those of us at home.

After the fundraiser is over I'll give you a summary of where some of the coffees went.

Thank you for helping if you can.

Our Troops are serving halfway around the world and it's easy for them to experience feelings of isolation and loneliness in these faraway places, especially during the holidays. Each time they receive one of your Cup Of Joe gifts, they know you care and it makes them feel a little bit closer to home.

During this eventful and joyous time of year, I'd like to ask that you please remember our deployed Troops. On behalf of everyone here at Green Beans Coffee, thank you for your wonderful support. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays!

"No higher Honor than supporting the Troops, and the families of the Fallen"

When this letter arrived in my inbox today, it was a reminder to me that our group fundraiser is coming to a close at the end of the month.

If you'd like to share a piece of home with some Troops this season, there is still time.

So far, as a group, we have provided 565 premium coffees for deployed service people!

If you would like to send a few more coffees for the holidays, you can do it at: http://youcaring.com/coffeefortroops

Thank you very much for your support of our deployed service members. You have demonstrated your support very well!

I really like the quote that the founder of the project sent: "No higher Honor than supporting the Troops, and the families of the Fallen"

Thank you for your part in honoring and supporting the Troops!

I hope your holidays are great and I wish you a wonderful 2015.

Thanks again,

Kathi

We received enough by Memorial Day to provide coffee to 150 deployed troops. That helps them know that they are not forgotten.

I would like to be able to provide 250 more by Independence Day. Please ask your friends to help? Even $2 will buy one coffee.

Thank you!
