The Story

(The story from Sam's point of view)
December 10. I can't describe it, other than the climax of some terrifying novel. Here are the facts:

At 11:00am, I received an email from a literary agent saying that she loves my novel and would like to represent it. This is something I'd been pursuing since 2005, a major goal achieved.

At 5:00pm, my house burned down. My wife and child (and even my 2 cats) got out safe and uninjured, but the house is likely a total loss. 6 firetrucks battled the inferno for a a full hour before putting it out. Almost every cop in the city seemed to be on the street. We walked away with the clothes on our back, but at least we were alive.

Three days later:
We are in temporary housing, which may sound like we are in a refugee camp, but it's acutally a Mariott. Really. We only have a few changes of clothes, but it's all we have space for.

We have insurance. Not anywhere near enough to cover the contents of the house, but we suspect it will cover what we are going to need for the rebuilding process. But we don't know anything for sure yet.

We know people want to help, and to be honest, we don't know for sure we won't need it. We're doing fine for now; if we need help, it will be later on, during the build process, or after.

AND... We are blown away and overawed and our hearts ache with how many people want to help. Over and over agian, people have reached out, asked what they can do. It's amazing how wonderful and supportive people are. Gives me faith in humanity.

So that's what this is for -- if you want to help, giving to this campaign is the best way to make sure we get what we need, when we need it.

Don't feel you have to give. We don't want that. We're doing well right now, and we do have insurance. But if you do want to help, thank you.

The Taylor family has been doing well. As of Thursday last week, we have moved into an apartment, hired a contractor, and started trying to figure out the rebuild process.

Little Sami is starting to adjust, but she still misses things from the old house. She also gets very sad when she loses anything, even hair bands. I think it has been harder on her than on us.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

A general update: We are slowly walking through the insurance process. We're not sure how much the inurance will cover. The process is much more complex than we first thought. Every day is a learning opportunity.

Janelly is worst off, with a mild chemical burn in her sinuses from the smoke. The doctor says it should clear up in a week. Sleep is a problem. None of us seem to be able to stay down for a full night. Sami is having Pokemon nightmares.

Other than that, we are doing very well. The important thing is that we are all alive and (relatively) healthy. The rest of it is just stuff.

Once again, we want to thank all of you out there for your help, your concern, and your caring. You are all wonderful.

We've uploaded a few photos of the house the way it currently looks.
