The UCLA Football team and the greater Bruin family lost a great young man a few weeks ago. His name was Nick Pasquale. To us students, we saw a fellow peer vanish from our lives. As an exemplary student-athlete, fueled by passion and driven by his family, friends, and teammates, Nick was enjoying all that life had to offer at UCLA. Nick was 20.
Six days following Pasquale’s passing, the UCLA Football team traveled to Memorial Stadium in Lincoln to take on Nebraska. The Bruin team was still grieving the loss of Nick.
We took the field.
Instead of a negative hostile environment, we found ourselves welcomed by compassion and respect due to the recent tragedy. Nebraska did not have to honor Pasquale. But instead, the university and its students went to great lengths to remember Nick: releasing blue and gold balloons during a moment of silence and making large banners, one in particular that read “Two Schools. One Team.”
This moving demonstration illuminates how indebted we are to their kindness and compassion when given difficult circumstances.
Every Bruin remembers when Nebraska tested the will and desire of our football team after a resounding 21-3 score only after the first half. We felt sorrow, yet realized that this was far more than a game. Our family had lost a brother, yet we kept fighting. It was our team’s courage and fight to rally together and accomplish something never been done before. 38 unanswered.
Looking back on so many highs and lows throughout the course of UCLA football history, last Saturday’s game marks one of the greatest UCLA football and athletic triumphs of all time. We witnessed it.
We sit here a week later and though just another thrilling week of football is around the corner, we want to show our thanks.
With all of the negative stories in sports, classy, genuine acts of kindness need to be highlighted. Nebraska’s students and fans need to be commended for reaching out to the Pasquale family and the UCLA community. The Den Student Action Committee would like to make a banner to show our thanks to the University of Nebraska, on behalf of the UCLA student body. We want to display this banner from the UCLA student section at the Rose Bowl during this Saturday’s UCLA Football game vs. New Mexico State.
After the game every player and coach will sign this banner and we will be sending it back to Lincoln, Nebraska in thanks to such inspiring actions.
Please help us realize this goal by making a donation, so The Den Student Action Committee can print this and then send it. We truly wish to show the Pasquale family our support and want to also show our most sincere thanks to Nebraska.
