The Story

My name is Jorge Espinoza. I am a native of Chile. Currently I am professor of cello and member of the La Catrina String Quartet at New Mexico State University ( Part of the quartet's activities consist of outreach concerts, many of which target underserved communities wherever we have performances. Between February 25-28 we will be playing and giving masterclasses at the Universidad de la Frontera in Temuco, and during that same residency we will visit the community of Chonchi for four days in order to work with the children of the Orquesta Juvenil de Chonchi, giving them clinics, coachings and private instruction as needed. The program, founded by Melody Jerez depends for its continued success and growth primarily on whatever funds can be raised through people outside this region.

In the island of Chiloe, Chonchi is a community of 13,000 residents in a remote location accessible only by ferry from the mainland, situated about 935 miles south of Santiago, Chile's capital. For this reason, access to goods and materials is limited and expensive.

Through this fundraiser we hope to help Melody and her students purchase basic materials for the program, such as strings and rosin to last the program about a year and sheet music to help the program develop a library for the students.

With about 40 children, the minimum cost for purchasing strings is as follows:

A) 10 Cello sets: $1,243 ($124.30 per each).\+\(D%27Addario\)#fq=ATR_Brand:Helicore\+\(D'Addario\)&fq=ATR_Instrument:Cello

B) 10 viola sets: $1,049 ($104.90 per each).\+\(Thomastik\+Infeld\)#fq=ATR_Brand:Dominant\+\(Thomastik\+Infeld\)&fq=ATR_Instrument:Viola

C) 40 violin sets $1,479 ($36.99 per each @ two sets per 1 year).\+\(Pirastro\)#fq=ATR_Brand:Chromcor\+\(Pirastro\)&fq=ATR_Instrument:Violin

Total amount for strings: $3,771

The estimate to begin a modest music library that the students can use to help develop their instrumental skills is as follows:

Violin method books: $1,800 (set of 6 method books at $14.99 per each).

Viola method books: $900 (set of 6 method books at $14.99 per each)

Cello method books: $900 (set of 6 method books at $14.99 per each)

Total cost of sheet music: $3,600

Rosin: $129

Grand Total: $7,371

Melody's courageous story was published by the New York Times on February 2, 2015. Here’s is the link to the documentary:

Please help us keep the torch of hope for this wonderful and selfless project.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will be funneled through the La Catrina Quartet and given in full to the Orquesta Juvenil de Chonchi for the above mentioned purposes.

Any help, in any amount, will be deeply appreciated.
