Last night Mike and I had the orphanage director and social worker over for dinner to sit down and talk about everything they are trying to do to help the children of Ethiopia and we found out a whole lot.
Covenant Orphanage is located in Holeta has 13 kids. We are looking for sponsor’s for monthly support to help them out. The monthly support need is $50 a month per child. Their monthly needs are: fresh fruits & veggies, eggs, formula & diapers (for 1), beans, rice, pasta, sugar, cooking oil, cleaning products and toiletries
Holeta Kindergarten is located a mile from the orphanage. They give education to children 4-6 years of age and this is a very poor area in Ethiopia. There are 147 children in kindergarten. Their monthly needs are: feeding the kids 1 meal a day (to include milk & eggs), teacher’s salary (4 teachers X 1,000 birr ($50 USD) a month=$200 a month for teachers’ salary), school supplies and toiletries (soap for washing up, cleaning desk & plates)
Military School-This is a school on the Ethiopian military base in Holeta and they allow the older children to go to school there. For 7 children from Covenant Orphanage to go to this school there, it is 1,500birr ($150) for all of them PER month.
Sponsorships throughout Ethiopia- While the director has given a safe and nice home to the 13 orphans that she takes care of and opening the local kindergarten to give education to the young and less fortunate, she also sponsors 150 children throughout Ethiopia (Holeta, Wolitz, Shone & Ambo). She also helps with in orphanage in Southern Nations with 15 children from the ages of newborn to 13 years old. At this current time, she has friends in the US and with the Church here that sponsor these children at $20 a month. This covers the necessary things to survive.
As you can see, this orphanage director is spreading her resources and donations thin to give the children of Ethiopia a chance at a good life and education. She is having a really hard time staying afloat and getting donations to support all of these children. She does get some support from friends in the US and from her church family here, but it is still not enough!!! Though the above seem like a lot, if all of it was added up, they only need $4,000USD per month to cover all of this!!!!! For all of these children and the support that Pochie is trying to give these children (325 children + 4 teachers), $4,000 a month is nothing!!! It would be great if a club, school, church, business or NGO would want to either sponsor a child or donate 1 full month of needs. We can all make a difference together!
