OMNI wants to walk its talk, and you can help.
OMNI is a community hub that supports peace, justice and ecology. Together, OMNI associates have done several energy efficient things to make the OMNI Center more sustainable. We've insulated, sealed, and installed a heat pump and an energy-efficient metal roof. We also reduce waste by recycling, use washable cloth hand towels, and avoid throw-away dishes and utensils.
We're now ready to tackle the big project we've been wanting to do since OMNI's genesis: SOLAR PANELS!
Environmental engineer Terry Tremwell and others are helping develop this project. Terry has informed us that a law passed by the Arkansas legislature last session has created a new fee on renewable energy users that will likely go into effect this November. Solar panels installed before the deadline will be fee-free for 10 years. These fees are intended by utility companies to reduce the attractiveness of renewable energy sources in favor of the status quo. If you are thinking about installing any renewable systems for your own use, take note!
To beat the deadline, we need to go solar NOW.
The planned system will be a 5kw system that meets 90% of our building energy needs. That means that donations you make will not only educate our community about the exciting potential of solar, but will also reduce the costs of running the OMNI Center. There will be more money for all the important programming we do. More money to help create a more progressive, inclusive Fayetteville!
OMNI needs to raise about $10,000 for this project. That might sound like a lot of money, but it’s amazingly reasonable for this kind of installation. It includes all of the materials for the installation, including panels, a transformer, wire and other smaller items. It also includes a small amount for signage, which will be used to educate people on what we're doing to decrease our carbon footprint. We seek to lead NWA in the movement for more sustainable energy. We want to EDUCATE and show that it can be DONE!
What’s not included in this amount is labor costs; a dedicated and capable Board member has volunteered to do most of the installation himself. You’ll hear more about that at the upcoming Kickoff Party. Moreover, we will be receiving the high-quality solar panels at a significantly reduced rate, further reducing the cost of this project. Other volunteer help will also be greatly appreciated.
We will be holding a fundraiser kickoff event on Saturday, August 26th at 5:00 pm at the OMNI Center. At the kickoff, you’ll hear the whole story, have the chance to meet solar experts, and learn the benefits of solar. If you have renewable energy on your mind, people will be present to answer your questions. This is something Fayetteville needs to know-- the educational outreach is beginning already!
Please, friends! Make your own donation toward this vital effort now, and plan to attend the event on the 26th, where you will also have the opportunity to donate to the cause. This is our chance to make a mark on Fayetteville that will shine with the sun!
