On February 2, a peaceful sit-in was conducted by a diverse group of Ohio University and Athens, Ohio community members. The protesters were asking for Ohio University President, Roderick McDavis, to commit to adopting policies that would protect immigrant and refugee students, among the most vulnerable members of our community. In a heavy-handed and unexpected act of repression, the Ohio University Police Department arrested 70 peaceful demonstrators and charged them with criminal trespassing. These charges carry a maximum fine of $250
and up to 30 days in jail. This was a highly disproportionate response to peaceful students who were not posing any threat to public safety.
Please help to support these students who put their safety and security on the line to fight for fairness and human dignity.
