The Story

On June 30, 2013, Houston Police Officer Ramiro Garcia was traveling home with his family after attending a wedding. When the rear tire had a blowout the vehicle crashed and Officer Garcia was ejected from the car. His injuries have left him bound to a wheelchair. He now lives with his parents and requires care around the clock. His mother is no longer working so that she can be home with Ramiro.

Jim Dutton has visited the Garcia’s home and knows that the Texas Home Improvement Team can make

a significant and lasting impact on the lives of the family.

Project objectives are:

  • Provide a wheelchair friendly environment inside and outside the home.
  • Simplify care process for Ramiro’s parents.
  • Update interior for efficiency and comfort.
  • Update yard for function and appearance.

Project elements include master bath conversion for wheelchair access, new flooring, updated kitchen, interior and exterior paint, new siding new doors, new windows and landscaping.

Target Dates: May 15-22, 2016.

The Garcia's are back home! It was an incredible feeling to present the Garcia with their renovated home. The team was able to deliver a beautiful, energy-efficient home that we know will simplify the care process for Officer Garcia's family. We are especially proud of the new bathroom will serve as a shower for Ramiro.

The outpouring of support for this project has been humbling. The companies and individuals that stepped up to help Officer Garcia and his family have touched us, the community and beyond. We are just days away from revealing the completely renovated home to the Garcias. One of the incredible aspects of this project has been the devotion of the police officers to help one of their own. They volunteered hundreds of hours to this project and took up any task put in front of them. The bond between the police officers is impressive, especially since many of them don't know Officer Garcia. We hope that in some small way this project tells the police officers, and others serving our community, that we appreciate what they do each and every day - and we've got your back.
Thank you to everyone who donated to this project. We promise that your contribution is making a difference in the life of this family.
