Ever since the first service on July 12, 1964, God has blessed “North Grand Christian Church.” During the summer of 1981, the congregation voted to construct a 120 x 35 foot insulated and concrete-reinforced dome and on Sept. 9, 1984, the dome was dedicated. The Lord has used this building for His mission and has blessed so many people in our church and the Ames community. (See Gallery for the ways our Dome has impacted the Ames Community in 2015-2016)
In 2015 signs of deterioration on the exterior of the dome revealed mold and numerous holes that have trapped moisture in the foam insulation. If left unattended, prolonged moisture could even cause structural damage. Over the course of the last 2 years the leadership looked at several options for repairing/replacing the exterior coating and fixing the foam moisture problem.
Back in January we contracted with WindSmart Systems (Des Moines) and Central States (Ames) to install a 60 mil. thermoplastic membrane that will cover the exterior of the dome that will also have an airflow design that will dry out the foam. The cost of the exterior project is $200,000 (20 yr. wnty.) (See Gallery)
They started the project May 12, 2017 and completed it on June 18th. Currently we have raised over $84,000 toward this project (Total: $249,000).
In addition to the dome exterior project, there will also be an interior project to remodel the dome entryway (Hatfield Construction, Inc.) for a cost of around $49,000. (See Gallery) The interior project was started on June 29th and plan to be done within 2 months.
