The Story

Dux is a darling thoroughbred, that wasn’t showing much promise as a racehorse!  When he bowed his tendon, his racing dad decided it was time for sweet Dux to get out of racing forever & move on to new things - so he contacted CANTER!  We were at capacity, & unable financially to take another horse into our program, but we happily list him on our free “Trainer Listings” & included him in the Golden Gate Fields Thoroughbred Showcase (in partnership with Golden Gate Fields Aftercare).  Poor Dux still was waiting for his perfect match.

Suddenly, Dux’s racing connections caught word on the street that a man was looking for a couple of riding horses – they believed they’d found Dux a great home on their own!  Sadly, this darling little gelding turned up at a livestock auction in Madera, CA!  Auction Horse Rescue contacted Golden Gate Fields Aftercare, who, in turn, called Dux’s racing dad.  Stunned & dismayed, he immediately stepped up to bail Dux out of auction!  Golden Gate Fields aftercare called CANTER to ask if there was ANY way we could take him into our program.  No one wanted to see this guy have to go back to the track, to wait for his forever home; after all he’d been through!

Strapped for funds, but desperately wanting to help, CANTER contacted our friends at Second Chances California.  Located in Stanislaus County, SCC works with probationers referred by the Stanislaus County Probation Department.  Students in the program gain valuable life skill, while working with horses under supervision!

SCC was able to provide CANTER a super discount on board for Dux!  Additionally, Dux will help teach the students about a horse straight off the track!  They’ll learn about caring for a bow tendon, plus Dux will get the chance to rest, rehab, & trust again.  The probationers will help him & he will help them, as they ALL work toward a brighter future!

NONE of this is free, however!  CANTER is still financially responsible for Dux, now that he’s entered our program (even in this very unique situation!).  We were not anticipating taking in another horse (otherwise we would have gladly taken him RIGHT off the track in the 1st place).  We just couldn’t bear to see him go through any more stress.  We are grateful for the fabulous rate SCC can provide us on board – but we need your help!

ANY contribution helps sponsor Dux!  We are aiming to raise $3970 which should cover Dux for up to 1 year with CANTER.

Approximate Costs Associated with Dux for 1 year

  • Initial Vet Exam & Vaccines: $125
  • Ferrier: $1170 approx. $130 every 6 weeks
  • Dentist: $175
  • Board (at the SUPER SCC discounted rate!): $1500 $125 every month
  • Extras (i.e. Emergency Fund/General Supplies/Training Aides/Etc.): $1000
  • TOTAL: $3970

If Dux is adopted in less than a year and/or any funds are “left over” they will go directly into the CANTER CA program to assist with other horses!  We are a 100% Volunteer;  501c3 NonProfit!  ALL donations are tax deductable & go straight to the care of the horses in the program. We officially accepted a new horse into our program!  "Havanna Jack" had 9 starts racing, but unfortunately sustained some knee damage (chips).  His racing connections decided to retire him from the track & rehome him for a new life.  He just had surgery to remove those nasty chips (we are grateful to his racing dad, Burnie, for committing to paying for the surgery - horray!)!  The extra funds raised for Dux will be transferred to help in the recovery & rehabilitaion of "Havanna Jack" - so that he may begin this new chapter of his life!

Dux arrived safely in his new home with his adoptive mom Briley!  We will be checking on them regularly - ensuring they are progressing well together.  They seem like a FABULOUS team!  We are SO grateful for your help... BOTH Dux & Havannah Jack are getting a new start thanks to your generousity!

Well - miracles happen!  :)  Dux actually DID find a perfect home, with a fantastic young woman that can offer him an amazing new life.  It was just too great to pass up - and we are thrilled to announce that he has been officially adopted!  He left on the trailer to his forever home, yesterday on 12/10!
Well.... since YOU donated $1670 towards his care, and we only used about $400 while he was with us... we are putting the excess funds towards taking in another horse into our program!  Our Board of Directors met over the weekend to confirm the details!  It is unusual for us to let a CANTER cutie go after just a month... but it was an ideal match!  He'll be safe & loved (and we'll be following up with him)!  And now - he (with your help) is allowing another OTTB a second chance!
Truly a Holiday Miracle!  Thanks to you ALL!!!

Dux has been doing really well with our friends at Second Chances California.  Julie says he already seems to know "Natural Horsemanship" techniques & is proving to be a very smart fellow!

But the BIGGEST update, is very surprising & exciting....
Dux may have already found his perfect "person"!!!

It is pretty darn unusual for CANTER to adopt out a horse this quickly... but it's looking like the fit is just too ideal.  A very special & wonderful young woman contacted us about him. She was very interested in Dux while he was on the initial trainer listings. After hearing his story, & talking extensively with CANTER & Second Chances California - it feels like a match made in Heaven.  It simply wouldn't be right to pass this up - it sounds perfect for Dux!

We'll keep you posted - he's received a "prepurchase examination" yesterday.  IF Dux has indeed found his perfect match... we will be meeting next week to discuss bringing in a new horse off the track all because of YOUR generosity.

Just last month, CANTER's funds were strapped & poor Dux was in an awful bind - but thanks to your support - Dux has a fresh new start & it's looking like we'll be able to help another!!!  THIS is what we dream about!

Stay tuned... we'll let you know!  Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!  We are SO grateful for Happy Endings! xoxo
