The Story

The feature-length documentary, "Rescued", tells the story of the rescuers and the rescued through an inspiring tale of passion, determination and love. "Rescued" explores the life of Theresa Strader, founder and executive director of the National Mill Dog Rescue in Peyton, Colorado.

Funds donated to National Mill Dog Rescue through this donation site (up to $10,000) will be allocated to NMDR's Outreach & Education program toward the development of the documentary "Rescued" and are therefore tax-deductible.  Donations above the $10,000 development goal will be used for other organizational purposes - to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome puppy mill dogs.

“Rescued” is currently in development which means they are researching, planning, and raising a production budget through corporate and private donators. They are also seeking the highest level of participation ranging from A-list celebrity support and animal behavior experts to caring rescue-dog owners. They very much welcome donations for this phase of production and we will certainly be launching a crowd-finding campaign in the near future.

Pete Schuermann, Director
Pete Schuermann is a well-established Emmy-award winning filmmaker with numerous film festival acceptances that affirm his credibility as a solid visual storyteller. Pete was born on Long Island and is currently a resident of Monument, Colorado. In 2005, Pete was approached byDisney to direct and edit Disneyland: Then, Now and Forever, a retrospective piece celebrating Disneyland’s 50th anniversary. Following that, he completed the national-acclaimed documentary HAZE (featuring Robin Wright-Penn), which graphically examined the beer-soaked party scene that permeates the national University and College environment. Next up was the narrative feature The Creep Behind the Camera, an edgy dark comedy/docudrama and told the story about the making of The Creeping Terror, arguably the worst monster movie ever made. His experience in the visual field includes on-the-job training in almost every aspect of visual production, including photography, lighting, editing, directing, scripting, graphics, and, of course, directing. Pete maintains an eye for what he calls a “cinematic style of storytelling”, which he feels adds a special dynamic and compelling approach to any visual project.

Dear Rescued supporters and followers,

It is with sadness and regret that we announce the termination of the documentary, Rescued. This was a mutual decision between Theresa Strader and the filmmakers; a decision made with the utmost deliberation and mutual respect.

As filmmakers, we were drawn to make Rescued as fans of Theresa's work and mission, knowing her story would be an amazing one to tell. However, as we delved further into the project, we began to realize more and more the potential threat that elements of the film could pose to NMDR’s mission. This extremely difficult realization culminated in all of us agreeing that terminating the project was the soundest decision and in the best interest of NMDR.

We deeply value the love and support shown to Theresa, NMDR and Rescued. Anyone who has donated to the project will be given a full refund, or will have the option of diverting the funds directly to NMDR to aid in continued day to day operations.
