The Story

Meet Jemma. This little, white Chihuaha was so very precious and peaceful, yet in desperte need. But once she received our help, her spirit bounded forth into the happiest life possible!

Jemma was rescued from an Ohio puppy mill. Poor nutrition and overbreeding took a tremendous toll on her little body. Her legs were plagued by luxating patellas, which our veterinarian has labeled grade 4, the worst case possible. And her teeth had rotted to the gums. Most of them had to be removed.

But hope was waiting on the horizon.

Surgery on one leg allowed Jemma to run and play almost like other dogs. One last surgery will get her to 100%!

The preliminary estimate for Jemma’s surgeries came to $1500 - $1900 per leg. Dental was separate. At just 5 years old, Jemma has so much time left to enjoy the benefits of getting two new legs up on life and eating pain free. And now she can ever since you chipped in to help.

If her tail wagging says anything, it’s that Jemma is happy to be alive and to have this chance to live a more normal life going forward.

The immediate goal was to feed Jemma higher nutrition in smaller amounts. She weighed 7.5 pounds at the start but now weighs what she should - 5+ pounds. She shed ¼ of her body weight to take the pressure from her languishing legs.

Jemma's first leg surgery was a huge success. She learned to run in no time and hasn't stopped since, but for having a dental done. It was discovered during her dental that her jaw had once been broken, but now that most of her teeth are removed, she kisses and eats without a hitch. Next up is the last surgery for which prognosis is excellent!

You helped Jemma take her first steps toward freedom, freedom from a life of physical output, confinement, pain and solitude. You helped her rest easy as she was prepared for a family who will love her the rest of her days. Jemma’s name means jewel or gem as well as little dove, and this little white dove can now fly free and shine.

Jemma not only has enough money to heal the last of her legs thanks to those of you who donated online and in person through the Healthy Pet Center, she has gained a family. Her foster folks and their first mill rescue have fallen so deeply in love with Jemma that they won't ever let her go. Her heart is embraced with their love and kindness. Congratulations to them all, and to you for your part of this story!

Jemma had been cared for through the Companion Animal Placement Program (CAPP) with fundraising support from Dog House Adoptions.

October 1: Jemma had her dental done today. She lost most of her teeth, but was able to keep a couple of her molars. She's resting next to me now, cuddled up with her sister, Roxy, who is also a rescue. She out cold, snoring away. Little Girl has been through so much. Thanks again to all who have donated to help this sweet dog.

From Jemma's foster mom, Laurie St Onge-Merges:
Jemma had a vet check for her repaired knee yesterday, and even though she is not using her leg as much as they had hoped, she got a great check up. Her weight is under 6lbs, and Dr. Lexi feels this is a good weight for her. We will start a bit of therapy with her to keep her leg moving, but Dr. Lexi feels it has healed well and it is only a matter of time before she is using it 100% She runs all the time now, it is so much fun to watch her enjoy life. Thank you to all who have donated to her cause. She is an amazing little dog.
