In its effort fulfill Christ’s call to feed the hungry, members of Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church, 150 Elizabeth Ann Circle, Bluff City TN 37618 assessed the local food pantry organizations and learned that there is a need for fresh bread by both Bristol Emergency Food Pantry and Haven of Rest, a local homeless shelter, soup kitchen, and food pantry. Currently, both charities rely on expired bread from local grocery stores or must use financial contributions to purchase bread.
Christ the Savior has the right resources to match the need for more bread at these food pantries. The church has a fully equipped professional kitchen. In addition, the parish leadership is committed to meeting the needs of the local community and has established the Feed His Flock ministry in order to do so. Two members of Christ the Savior, John and Kathi Clement, direct the ministry, which bakes, packages, and delivers bread to Bristol Emergency Food Bank and Haven of Rest Food Bank on a weekly basis.
In the first six months of the program, Feed His Flock will bake, package, and deliver over 1,500 loaves of bread to children and adults in need. Mr. and Mrs. Clement will also continue to spread the word about the Feed His Flock ministry through newsletters and social media to interested members of the local community, including other churches. In year two and beyond, with at least four volunteers, the ministry anticipates baking 3,000 or more loaves annually. We have several hundred dollars in reserve now but as the baking gains momentum we will need additional funds. Sponsor a week of baking for $20.
