The Christmas Party for Homeless Veterans has become one of the most important events of the year for the men and women served by Volunteers of America Michigan.
If you've attended past parties, you understand the sense of family created by the event. If you've volunteered in the past, you experienced one of the true blessings of Christmas: to give what you have ... your time, your money, a roasted Turkey, three dozen cookies ... to people you've never met.
This year marks year number five for the Christmas Party for Homeless Veterans. What started as an idea between my wife and I has now grown into a movement ... a cause ... shared by hundreds of people. Our goal? To give a group of homeless Veterans a homemade Christmas dinner. To have them fill out a modest gift wish list of things they may need or want, and then fullfill their wishes. To give them a night out, where they can dance to the music of a live band, make new friends, and make their own Christmas memories.
In our first year we raised $600. The second year we raised $1,300. As more people began to show interest in our cause, we were able to raise almost $5,000 in our third year. Last year, in 2012, we set an aggressive goal to raise $7,500. Quite honestly, I didn't think it was possible. Thankfully we rely on the goodness and grace of God more than our own ability. Through the tremendous work of over 130 individuals, companies, and civic groups, we were able to raise $17,700! With that we not only provided an incredible Christmas party for 60 homeless Veterans in Lansing, but we were able to do the same for 17 Veterans in the Niles, MI shelter, and 13 homeless Veteran families in the Lansing area. We also fixed leaky roofs, replaced appliances, bought computers, and replaced six window air conditioners ... among other things.
Our fundraising goal for this year is $10,000. We're looking forward to making our FIFTH Christmas party as special and memorable as the first four, and we need your help. Please donate today!
