Since he was a kid, my good friend Nils has dreamed of being a Civil War historian and has engrossed himself in learning everything about the Civil War. In undergraduate school, where he was my roommate for two years, he graduated at the top of his class with a degree in History. He is now in his second semester of his master's program in Civil War history at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is thrilled to be living in a place where the Civil War took place, and he volunteers at a local military park and holds a museum internship.
Nils faces many challenges from having Asperger's syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism that makes socializing difficult. I've seen him overcome many huge hurdles over the four years I've known him due to his tenacious spirit. Wanting to help others with the same challenges, Nils founded a club for students on the autism spectrum, which you can read about here
. For all of his hard work, Nils won a $500 scholarship from the Kerry Magro Foundation, a nonprofit that helps students with autism pursue a post-secondary education. You can read about him at the KMF website here
Nils is currently living with his mom, Renee, in a small house. Income Renee and Nils relied on to pay for undergraduate school in California have become unavailable or harder to obtain in graduate school in North Carolina. Renee raised Nils on her own since he was born, and she has faced so many huge difficulties helping Nils achieve his goal. She is currently overwhelmed with paying for her and Nils' living expenses and Nils' tuition and books. I hope this fundraiser will help Renee and Nils through the final stretch of acheiving their shared dream for which they have worked so hard and long.
