Since 2016, water protectors have been fighting the Sabal Trail pipeline, a project that would threaten the Florida Aquifer and hasten the onset of climate change. In addition to filing complaints and spreading awareness about the dangers posed by a compressed gas pipeline, water protectors engaged in a campaign of nonviolent direct action to force decision-makers to address its environmental impacts.
In one of the most recent actions, we (Niko and Karrie) locked down inside of the Sabal Trail Pipeline, intent on remaining there until officials reconsidered the pipeline's Environmental Impact Statement. We remained in the pipeline for more than ten hours before we were extracted, and successfully stopped construction on the pipeline for the entire day.
Afterward, both of us faced three felony charges and $28,000 in restitution. Although these charges were absurd, we managed to get a deal in which we would face only one misdemeanor charge, and $7,000 in restitution. Our deliberation was long and careful, and after hearing advice from our lawyers we decided to take the deal, with the idea that taking the case to trial would likely spur higher restitution and more severe charges.
We are now on probation, but will have a chance to end the probation early when the restitution is paid. We feel that ending probation early is especially important in the wake of the recent arrest of a fellow water protector who was on probation: despite the fact that her arrest was unwarranted, her probation was still violated. We don't want this to happen to us as well, and we need your help to make sure that we do not miss a payment and violate parole. Please give what you can, and share this link with your friends.
Thank you to the loads of support we and other activists have received. It means so much to have a community standing behind us, and fighting against the Sabal Trail Pipeline! Water is life!
