Hello, my name is Nico Serra. I’m an advocate and organizer for disability access and justice. I am mixed race and transgender and working towards revolutionary reform for the inequities perpetuated by the healthcare system, but in the meantime, I could use your help for filling in some cracks!
I remember as a child, when I would lose a tooth, my parents would give me a dollar for it. If only I could buy a tooth for a dollar now! I am on Social Security Disability. There is no coverage for anything beyond the basics and my dentist has recommended more extensive procedures than my coverage will endure. I approached my local dental school to see if I could receive part or all of my care at a reduced or free cost. They replied after examination that I was too complex a patient because of my genetic collagen disorder. I cannot be approved for credit because my income is too low to qualify me.
What time do most people go to the Dentist?
Transparent funding estimate…$500 CT scan-impression and wax up, 2($2600)=$5200 implant and bone graft, 2($1600)=$3200 crown. Because I can wait up to a year between getting the graft and the crown I will make additional fundraising efforts and pro-bono requests. For now I am hoping to come up with the initial $5200 to get my pain under control, this amount is more than seven times what I live on each month.
On my right side one tooth is missing. The hole where it used to reside gets constantly torn up when I chew resulting in significant gum irritation, redness and pain. On my left side the other tooth is broken and is cutting my cheek and tongue daily where the jagged edge hits tissue. I can no longer chew on that side of my mouth because the remaining tooth is extremely fragile. It has been broken for 6 months now. So far I have been careful and lucky and avoided infection. I am immune compromised and each of these injuries could result in significant health crisis should they escalate. I am awaiting other surgeries for injuries and the possibility of my mouth becoming infected and preventing medical procedures I’ve been waiting for for years has me shaking in my boots!
I will welcome the sweet relief of a pain-free smile with an eager heart. I’ll be ecstatic to chew solid food on both sides of my mouth! I want to not worry about the risk of infection from open wounds in my mouth. I want to regain my focus on my community contributions and the necessary changes so many of us need. I want to do it with a big wide smile. That is why I need you tooth fairies! If you have some dollars to spare for my mouth I would greatly appreciate your support!!! All amounts are welcome. Thank You Thank You Thank You.
