In the blink of an eye your world can change forever! For Nick Paquette it happened a week before his 20th birthday. While helping his Dad with housework over Easter weekend, he had a sudden partial loss of vision in one eye and blurriness in both. Thinking it was due to looking at the sun suddenly, he didn't think much of it, and went back to school to prepare for finals and the end of his Sophomore year.
The eye situation however persisted, and arrangements were made to see an Eye Doctor in New Paltz. The thought was a routine exam would reveal the need for glasses. The reality was SHOCKING! Roth Spots - which are rare and occur when there is a serious underlying condition. Within hours, numerous tests and then a week long admission into the ICU for a dangerously high WBC due to an extremely rare form of Leukemia -Cancer of the Blood.
After his release, he returned home unable to finish the final two weeks of the semester due to sheer exhaustion from being hospitalized and fatigue from the chemotherapy treatments. Every day though he is getting stronger.
Although the road ahead of him will be long and winding, Nick is a true champion! He has always and continues to be an exceptional student and athlete! He has made arrangements to finish the current semester from home. So far, 4 out 5 classes were finished with a final grade of an A in each. One more to go!
He is determined to return in the fall to start his Junior year and re-join his college basketball team. We all know the saying "if there is a will, there is a way", well in this case IF there is a way There is The WILL!
No doubt there will be great challenges, but Nick is loved by so many, and he has the support of two very strong parents who will do whatever it takes for him to receive the best care possible so he can live a healthy, successful and productive life.
Although the family is covered by private insurance and both parents work full time, there are extraordinary out of pocket and uncovered medical expenses which have been and will continue to be incurred for many years to come, and in Nick's case, his lifetime.
With that in mind, any help to to alleviate the fears and burden for Nick and his family will be received with heart felt gratitude and thanks whether it is a prayer or a donation to this fund.
Any funds raised will be earmarked solely for the costs associated with treatment and care.
If you never had the chance to meet Nick, rest assured he is an extraordinary young man. He will be a shining example of HOPE for all struggling with Leukemia, a life threatening disease.
