Anakbayan Montreal is a comprehensive national democratic, mass movement of Filipino youth which raises social awareness and advocates for the betterment of the Filipino community in Canada and the Philippines.
The Philippine government is gearing towards privatizing healthcare, which will cause millions of people to lose access to their basic healthcare needs. This is expected to severely hurt marginalized populations, such as the farmers and sugar farmworkers of the Negros Island, in the Philippines who would not be able to afford to pay for their medical needs.
We are fundraising for medical support to Council for Health and Development (CHD) and Negros Island Health Integrated Program (NIHIP). CHD and NIHIP aim to lay down the foundations of an alternative health care system at the community level. These grassroots organizations provide medical services and basic medical trainings to urban poor and rural communities. Youth from all over the world volunteer in hopes to leave behind a lasting impact.
Beatrice Dimaculangan of Anakbayan Montrreal will complete her internship in the Negros Island with CHD and NIHIP in June 2018. Bea is a Montreal-based Filipina-American painter, poet, femcee, activist and community organizer. She is currently studying International Development & Music Entrepreneurship at McGill University. She combines her passion for activism and art to push for national democracy in the Philippines. She will be assisting local healthcare professionals in providing medical assistance and training to the local population. Moreover, she will be documenting how national democratic organizers use hiphop, street theatre and visual arts to community organizing.
