Starting our family was supposed to be easy. The plan was, once we were ready, we would try to get pregnant and nine months later there would be a baby!
As we all know, life doesn't care about our best laid plans. After fourteen months of trying, we decided to begin fertility treatments. Amazingly, without ever needing the treatments, Sarah became pregnant and Luke made his way into the world.
We adore our little family, but we are confident that it isn't complete yet. After trying to get pregnant again for three years, we have decided to adopt. We never really considered international adoption. Both of us feel led to adopt domestically. We also want the adoption to have some level of openness, which means we would have a relationship with the birth mother. We believe this is best for mother and child during the adoption process.
Adoption is expensive - even domestic adoption. When we began the process, we started working with a smaller agency whose cost was something we could afford without fundraising or taking out a loan. After 18 months, there has been no possibilities through this agency and there are really none on the horizon. So we have listed with another more agressive referral agency, and the costs are significantly higher.
In a perfect world, we wouldn't have to fundraise. Asking for help is not something we are good at. Asking for money is something we are worse at. But, as we have thought about this, we have come to realize this isn't about asking for money. We are asking you to be a part of our family's story.
In this way, we are really excited about this PUZZLE FUNDRAISER! Here's how it works:
- Our friend Joel Schoon-Tanis is an amazing artist. Seriously, just check out his amazing work. We had one of his paintings made into a 500 piece puzzle.
- We are "selling" each piece for $20. You can buy 1, 2, 3, or 20! There's no limit to how many you can buy. Just donate in $20 increments (we'll handle the math from there!)
- When you purchase a piece, we will write your name on the back of the piece(s) you bought.
- Once the "sold" pieces are assembled and the puzzle is completed, we'll frame it in a double-sided frame so that it can be hung in our child's room, with all the names visible from one side.
From day one, we will tell our child his/her unique story about becoming a part of our family. Included in that story will be this puzzle, and all of you who had a "piece" of their adoption story.
If we sell all 500 pieces of the puzzle for $20 we will raise our goal of $10,000! While this will not cover the whole cost of the adoption, it will make it possible for us get the loans we need to cover the complete cost.
We are so grateful for all of you who choose donate. It means the world to us, and we are thankful that you are a piece of our story.
