The Story

Access to clean water presents an immense challenge to people living in the district of Tharparkar (both in Pakistan and neighbouring areas in India). District Tharparkar is one of the most water insecure regions in the countries and the area has been facing drought for more than five years. Families often lack sufficient water to drink, bathe, cook, grow crops, feed animals, and do laundry. Sadly, women and girls are most affected by lack of clean water and sanitation; Girls are taken out of school to help with getting daily potable water from areas located many kilometers away. With your duas and donations we can help create hand pump wells in these villages, create full sanitation systems (which includes latrines) as well as training for maintenance of the systems and general hygiene. Its time for you to get involved and help.

This integrated water access strategy will address a multitude of barriers to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene access, by installing sustainable facilities and promoting creative public health messaging in approximately 30 villages. This will also include up to 60 health and hygiene sessions in these villages by sharing best practices. The health and hygiene sessions focused on hand washing before handling food and after using the bathrooms, the dangers caused by open defecation, and proper waste management techniques.

In addition to these sessions, an ongoing radio campaign is being implemented to informing listeners on how to prevent waterborne diseases.

The Muslim Water Fund (MWF) in partnership with IDRF are putting in the effort to try to raise funds towards this project which Inshallah will ultimately bring sustainable changes, resulting in improved public health outcomes, economic security, education, and safety. It all begins with clean water, and the result is a brighter future for everyone.

In India, there is also an effort to bring innovative water access solutions and farming strategies to drought-affected communities in Rajasthan (neighbouring Tharparker district of Pakistan). Identified as one of the most arid regions within Asia, the Thar Desert, is partly located in the Rajasthan state of Northern India and partly in the Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan.

It is particularly known for its erratic rainfall and mostly dry, climatic conditions where little or no development has been done. The Thar Desert is also one of the most economically backward regions of India as well as Pakistan.

Being extremely drought prone, the area suffers from an acute lack of potable, drinking water and its inhabitants, with extremely poor health. Along with the prevalent water crises, frequent droughts cause a great loss in agricultural produce as well which results in severe nutritional deficiency.

In India, the MWF and IDRF project comprises viable local interventions including rainwater harvesting and water purification - hand pumps wells can sometimes not be feasible in these villages due to geologic conditions that arise in non-potable water from such wells. As mentioned above, by installing both hand pump wells or other viable options (such as rainwater harveting) this saves the women the labour of trudging for miles to procure water for their families. IDRF is also planting fruit trees which will improve the nutrition sources for the inhabitants.

Please donate today and make dua for the success of this project. We can't do it without your support!
