The Story

MuralArte Guate transforms grey public walls into thought provoking works of art, as colourful as Guatemala’s rich history and culture. Founder of the project, artist Carin Steen uses her years of experience as mural painter in Central America to teach children and young adults of remote communities to explore, interpret and express their cultural identity and other themes through murals, using a participative methodology that involves members of the community in creating a public work of art.

As word goes around, more and more requests for murals keep coming in from schools and local projects. This is great, because it means that the art is truly appreciated. Unfortunately, most local schools and initiatives can not afford a professional mural. And that’s where I need some help…

Any donation is much appreciated! Donations go towards paint, paintbrushes, transportation and other expenses.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

And the first mural of 2018 is a fact! A small daycare centre in San Bartolomé Becerra (Antigua Guatemala) now has a complete new look with a series of 5 paintings at the patio, corridor and entrance hall, right on time for the beginning of the school-year. Thanks so much to Kristin, Jody, Shoshi, Wendy and Tommy for sponsoring! For more information, please visit: http://www.muralarteguate.org/2018/01/a-new-school-year-new-learning.html

A brand new -big!- project is about to get launched: On February 1st I'll start working with 54 adolescent from a school at the outskirts of Chimaltenango. After a series of multidisciplinary workshops, we'll make one heck of a mural together! The wall is there, the kids are definitely there and the plans are there, only thing lacking is a few donations towards paint, art supplies, transportation etc.  So please donate and let's make Chimaltenango a bit more beautiful. Believe me, the place needs it...

Thanks so much to all the people who have donated so far, through this campaign of otherwise! A few more donations and the creation of the first series of murals will be a fact! Before January 15 (when classes start again) I’d like to finish 4 small and 1 bigger mural in the day-care centre of San Bartolomé Becerra,  a small village just outside Antigua, Guatemala. The day-care centre caters to 30 children age 6 months-6 years, from the poorest people in the community. Besides classes and fun activities, the children receive breakfast, lunch and twice a day a snack. The local municipality pays the rent while the government provides the food. All other supplies and needs are covered by donations and volunteers.

The director of this day-care centre approached me when she saw me painting elsewhere in the neighbourhood. She asked if I could paint some murals in the patio and corridor. I promised I’d try to get the needed funds together….

So the plan is to paint three small murals in the corridor, one in the entrance and a bigger one (5 x 2.75m) at the patio. My idea is to typical toys from Guatemala against half abstract backgrounds in bright colours.

About $200 more in donations, and these murals will soon be a fact!

Thanks so much for your support!
