For the past ten years, sixth graders at Mt. Royal Elementary/Middle School have had the opportunity to participate in an exciting week-long outdoor educational program focusing on environmental science and character education. This program is conducted by NorthBayand is located one hour north of Baltimore on the Chesapeake Bay in Northeast, MD. It has been an excellent opportunity for students to experience science in the natural environment during a five-day, four-night sleepover camp. Students have been offered the opportunity to learn about the environment, challenge themselves and build new relationships.
This year approximately 100 students will be headed to Northbay during May 2018. As with any field trip, particularly a week-long experience, there is a cost involved. In the past, Mt. Royal has budgeted to pay for transportation and part of the tuition cost and parents have contributed substantially to the $275.00 per student cost., which covers covers lodging, meals, activities, and materials for the week.
Due to budget cuts, in order for us to continue this program, the entire cost is left to the responsibility of parents and we are seeking community support to assist in funding this valuable educational opportunity.
We hope to be able to support about $100 of the trip cost, transportation, and help students who may have difficulty paying the full amount. Fee collection and fundraising will occur through April and support is being coordinated by our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). In addition to raising money via YouCaring, we will be hosting a teacher and parent-led Chili Fundraiser in our school cafeteria on February 7th, 2018 from 5-8pm. This event allows the surrounding community to be involved in this program and helps the students that will directly benefit from our fundraising efforts to take a lead role in ensuring this trip is a success.
Mt. Royal is a Title 1 school serving approximately 725 students from Pre-K to eighth grade. We provide an arts focus to the curriculum and offer opportunities for gifted and talented learners and are located in the heart of Baltimore City, MD.
