The Story

Sassy is my neighbor Helen's cat (I call him Mr. Sassy Pants). He is about 1 year old, and he likes to go outside to explore the neighborhood. Recently, he came home from his daily travels with an injured leg. He couldn't put weight on it and it was very swollen, so we took him in to see the vet.

The vet was considerate of the fact that Helen is disabled and on a fixed income and not able to afford extensive veterinary bills. Since Sassy had a temperature, Dr. Sarah thought the injury could be from an infection from a previous wound Sassy had experienced, and she gave him IV and oral antibiotics. She decided to wait on doing expensive X-rays to see if the antibiotic would reduce the inflammation and pain that he was experiencing.

Sassy has been on the antibiotic for a week and a half now and, unfortunately, the swelling has gotten worse instead of better. He is obviously in pain, and he cannot walk on the leg. Helen is keeping him indoors now, and he is spending most of his time laying in his bed.

It it is clear that Sassy needs X-rays to further assess his injury. He will have to be sedated for the X-rays, and Dr. Sarah would like to have him neutered at the same time. This, along with his existing bill, will cost around $400. Depending on what is found with the X-Rays, his treatment could cost considerably more than that.

I agreed to help Helen raise some funds to get Sassy the X-rays and treatment he needs. He is a wonderful cat who brings much joy to his human caretaker. Can you help us get Sassy healthy and active again?

We we appreciate any help that you can offer. Thanks so much for your support!

Sassy is doing fairly well. His leg is still swollen, so he is continuing with antibiotics to attack the infection. He gets around well despite having no use of the leg. In fact, he has slipped outside a couple of times when Helen wasn't looking. He really needs to stay indoors to keep from aggravating the injury further. We are ramping up efforts to find him a new home where he can be monitored a little more closely.

The vet now thinks that the amputation surgery is the wisest course of action. He will need to be closely watched for 2-3 weeks afterwards. Surgery won't be possible until the infection is gone. The expected cost of the surgery will be between $800-1,200, so I have raised the fundraising goal.

Any support that you have given, or can give to help Sassy find a home or meet the finances needed for his surgery are greatly appreciated. Please share this blog post that I wrote telling his story if you can, in case someone you know might be the special person he is looking for.

Thanks for caring for Sassy and Helen!

Sassy has been showing great improvement over the past week or so. The inflammation in his leg has been going down, and he has seemed to be feeling better. Today, however, I saw his leg, and there is quite a bit of swelling again. This is quite concerning. We called the vet and she put him back on antibiotics.

It is becoming increasingly likely that he will need to have the leg amputated at the affected joint. The surgery won't be cheap, and he will need a lot of care through his recovery. Helen is not sure she can give him what he needs.

We had a frank discussion, and we both agreed that it might be better for Sassy to be re-homed with someone who can better attend to his needs. Helen has her own health issues to contend with, and she is on a fixed income. She loves Sassy, and as much as she would like to keep him with her, she believes he will be better off with someone who is more equipped to deal with him. (Helen does have other pets so she will not be alone.)

So that is where we are now. We are looking for a special person who is willing and able to take on a sweet cat who will likely need some medical attention for the short term. Sassy is young, approximately a year old, and otherwise healthy. He has been neutered and he has his shots. Once he gets through the surgery and recovery, he has a good chance of living a long healthy life. We hope to find a home in the northeast Ohio area, but if that is not possible, we might be able to arrange transportation to other states.

Do you know a special someone who might like to add Sassy to his or her family? Please share and help us find him the purrfect home.

We will keep the fundraiser active until he no longer needs support. Your kind support has gone a long ways to offset the costs of his care. Currently, he has a balance of $175, and he will likely have new care added to that.

Thanks so much for your caring support for Mr. Sassy Pants!

Sassy's leg looks much better today! The swelling is going down and his toes are no longer tender to touch. He is still grumpy when he sees me and hides, because I caused him to have a very bad day on Tuesday. He let Helen hold him so I could take his picture, but he let us know he wasn't happy about it. He is still not putting any weight on the injured leg, which is fine. We really don't want him to until it is much more healed. Let's hope that he can use it in the future.

Thanks so much for all the great support! We are just $95 away from our goal. Every little bit helps! Thanks for caring for Sassy and Helen!
