The Story

  • Following one of the largest fires in California history, the small town of Montecito was situated in the path of destruction for what is being referred to as a "once in 200 years" mudslide. Along with cars, houses, and countless other property, the mudslides claimed over 20 lives and have displaced hundreds of people for the forseeable future.

  • Now that the community is in recovery stages, I believe it is of the utmost importance to support small, local businesses after having lost traction for two months, as well as those unable to work as a result of the economic stagnation.

  • My intent is to ride my bicycle 175 miles over 3 days from the Highway 1 landslide closure at Ragged Point (Big Sur) through the Central Coast of California, to Montecito. The ride will take place Friday, March 9th - Sunday, March 11th, and I hope to raise at least $10 for every mile that I ride from slide to slide.

  • I have teamed up with my employer, Ken Brown Wines, to incentivize donations with our handcrafted Santa Barbara County wines.

  • Donations of $100 or more I will receive a bottle of Ken Brown Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir as a token of our gratitude for your generosity and care. Donations of $200 or more will be reciprocated with a bottle of Ken Brown Rancho La Vina Pinot Noir. (Electronic vouchers will be provided for redemption at our tasting room in Buellton, CA. Out of area/state donors will receive complimentary shipping on my behalf.)

  • Together, we will help improve the lives of those dear to us. Your donation is appreciated beyond comprehension.

Friends of Santa Barbara,

Please forgive me for not posting this sooner, as the last few weeks have been absolute madness in my world. I would like to officially announce that all of the money raised by the wonderful supporters of the 2018 Fight the Slides Ride has been apportioned and donated to 3 separate entities as of today, 4/11. They are:

1) The Unity Shoppe of Santa Barbara (30%)

2) The Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade (30%)

3) La Casa de Maria Retreat Center of Montecito (40%)

I chose La Casa de Maria Retreat Center for a few reasons, however I think that their mission statement best sums up my feelings towards the local community, as well as my community of amazing supporters and donors all over the world. Their goal is:  to cultivate spiritual growth, to foster understanding and respect  for diverse cultural and spiritual traditions, to promote the common  good of our communities through art, education and health and healing, to nurture a culture of peace and social justice, and to renew the earth.

For information on any of the organizations, please google search them, and for any specific inquiries as to why I donated to these 3 organizations, please send me a direct message.

I cannot thank you enough for this experience, giving me the opportunity to help others through the support and kindness of my network of amazing humans.  Thank you friends of Santa Barbara, and ride on!!

Hello Friends of Santa Barbara!

I am writing you with a full heart and heavy legs this morning as I can now say that the slides have officially been fought. It was a stunning weekend in the Central Coast to take on this 175 mile challenge for the benefit of the Montecito Community.

I would like to thank everyone who has donated and encouraged me along the way, your support has reminded me yet again how amazing my network of incredible humans truly is.

I will be leaving the crowd-funding site open through the weekend, and closing it thereafter to donate the proceeds in early April.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Duncan

Hello Friends of Santa Barbara!

Today was the day we’ve been waiting for, and wow was the weather spectacular to tour the central coast from Big Sur to Pismo Beach! This photo was taken this morning around 8:45 am as I came around the corner from Ragged Point towards the Piedras Blancas lighthouse just north of Hearst Castle and elephant seal beach.

68 miles later I rolled into Pismo Beach ready for a shower and a nap, knowing that the 50 mile leg to Lompoc tomorrow entails a significant amount of climbing through the hills of Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Please continue to share the word with family and friends as I hope to blow out my initial fundraising goal during the ride, all for the community of Montecito. Thank you so much to everyone who has already supported this fundraiser, and sent their well wishes during the ride.

Thank you and ride on!

Duncan
