The Story

  • Following one of the largest fires in California history, the small town of Montecito was situated in the path of destruction for what is being referred to as a "once in 200 years" mudslide. Along with cars, houses, and countless other property, the mudslides claimed over 20 lives and have displaced hundreds of people for the forseeable future.

  • Now that the community is in recovery stages, I believe it is of the utmost importance to support small, local businesses after having lost traction for two months, as well as those unable to work as a result of the economic stagnation.

  • My intent is to ride my bicycle 175 miles over 3 days from the Highway 1 landslide closure at Ragged Point (Big Sur) through the Central Coast of California, to Montecito. The ride will take place Friday, March 9th - Sunday, March 11th, and I hope to raise at least $10 for every mile that I ride from slide to slide.

  • I have teamed up with my employer, Ken Brown Wines, to incentivize donations with our handcrafted Santa Barbara County wines.

  • Donations of $100 or more I will receive a bottle of Ken Brown Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir as a token of our gratitude for your generosity and care. Donations of $200 or more will be reciprocated with a bottle of Ken Brown Rancho La Vina Pinot Noir. (Electronic vouchers will be provided for redemption at our tasting room in Buellton, CA. Out of area/state donors will receive complimentary shipping on my behalf.)

  • Together, we will help improve the lives of those dear to us. Your donation is appreciated beyond comprehension.

Hello Friends of Santa Barbara!

Thank you all for your continued support of the 2018 Fight the Slides Ride, and your understanding as rain continues to postpone the ride due to safety concerns.

It looks as though we're in for one more storm in the middle of next week, followed by sunny skies through the weekend of 3/23-3/25! I'm holding out hope that Mother Nature cooperates and I can hit the pavement Thursday or Friday of next week. My bike is feeling very lonely as the recent bout of storms have kept us from training to conquer the 175 mile route over 3 days through the Central Coast.

That being said, all of us in Santa Barbara County are continually holding our breath and thankful that so far no major downpours have hit Montecito and caused further erosion/damage. Please continue to share and spread the word about the ride with your family and friends! I have named another beneficiary of the fundraiser proceeds, which is the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade (SB^3) that I volunteered with near the end of January. Their hope is to take the concept national, and then international as help continues to be needed throughout communities worldwide. For more information about the Bucket Brigade, please visit https://www.santabarbarabucketbrigade.org/

Thank you as always for your generosity, support, and well wishes.

Ride On,

Duncan Marks

Hello Friends of Santa Barbara!

As fate would have it, the spring rains are coming and will be arriving to the Central Coast Thursday- Sunday of this week. While I would love dry conditions for riding, we desperately need the water in this part of California to carry us into the summer season. Fore safety reasons, I will be postponing the ride until the first dry weekend in March, whenever Mother Nature should decide to cooperate with me (hopefully within the next two weekends.) Please stay tuned for updates as I continue to eye the extended weather forecast for our area.

That being said, I am only $90 away from my fundraising goal, and would love to surpass it for those who are still feeling the effects of the most recent natural disasters. Donations will continue to be accepted through April 1st.

We will all be anxiously holding our breath for those in Montecito who will be under mandatory evacuations with predicted rainfall for the foreseeable future. There's no telling whether or not another mudslide could happen, and as a result nearly 30,000 people will be under repeated evacuation orders throughout the rainy season.

Thank you to those who have donated so generously thus far - donation wines will be shipped out in the coming 2 weeks. Please continue to share and spread the word. Your generosity and thoughtfulness is appreciated beyond measure.

Thank You and Ride On!

Hello Friends of Santa Barbara!

A few logistical updates for those following the ride:

  • I am 67% of the way to my goal of $10 for every mile of the ride! Please keep sharing with your network, every dollar is appreciated beyond measure.

  • I have named the charity I will be donating 50% of the proceeds to, which will be the Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara. I chose this non-profit because they have provided support to those affected by the natural disasters on all levels - ranging from displaced victims, to those in our community unable to work and support their families during the economic stagnation.

  • With some storms in the forecast, I am watching the weather closely in case Mother Nature decides to rain on my ride. Should things get too wet to ride next weekend, my alternate weekend will be March 30-April 1.

  • Donations are still being accepted through April 1st, with full gratitude for your support! I have teamed up with my employer, Ken Brown Wines, to incentivize donations of $100 or more with a bottle of our Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir. Donations of $200 or more will be reciprocated with a bottle of our Rancho La Vina Vineyard Pinot Noir. Shipping to out of area or out of state donors is no problem.

  • My lovely Mother will be providing the car support for this ride. As usual, I couldn't do it without her support!

Please keep an eye out for the itinerary as we get closer to the ride next weekend, barring any severe weather events!

Thank you and ride on!
