On November 28, 2016, Nasa the Greyhound got loose from his foster home. After an exhaustive 6 day search, Nasa's body was recovered from the median of the nearby highway. He had only been in our adoption program for two days when this tragedy happened. Nasa's Wish is that no other adoptable Greyhound go through what he went through.
When a Greyhound gets loose they can become so focused on the thing they are chasing that they don't hear their name being called AND, they can run up to 40 miles an hour. Often though, like in Nasa's case, they find a wooded area to take refuge in and it becomes very difficult to locate them. We were able to get a live trap into the area where he was last spotted but, we had no way of knowing if he was still there just hours later. Many of them are so afraid that they are difficult to catch but, if we know better where to place the live trap, it will give us an advantage in locating and hopefully trapping the dog. In other cases where the gate has been unknowingly left open, the foster home may not know for several minutes that the dog is loose.
This fundraiser is to purchase enough Whistle GPS units for every adoptable dog in our program and to support the monthly fees for six years. The Whistle GPS tracks the dog both when it is at its home base and when it is not. When the dog leaves home base, it alerts all owners of the device both through e-mail and an app alert and includes mapping that will give directions to reach the device. Knowing the location of the device should give us a much more accurate idea of where to place a live trap and will enable us to mobilize our search much more quickly.
