Hurricane Harvey devastated the Texas Gulf Coast on August 25-30. More than 45 of our Mandarin Immersion Magnet School (MIMS) families and staff flooded that weekend. At MIMS, we are a tight-knit community and social media quickly helped us find out who needed help and what the immediate needs were. As the water receded, parents organized to help flood victims in many areas. From cutting drywall and removing hardwood floors to providing a hot meal, from caring for children while parents worked on their homes to helping displaced families move into temporary housing, the MIMS community banded together. While this show of support was amazing and humbling, it should come as no surprise as our community simply carried out the values it chose when the school started: respect 敬爱, perseverance 毅力, integrity 正直, curiosity 好奇, courage 勇气, and responsibility 责任. And what better way to teach our children than leading by example!
Now the recovery begins and those families need YOUR support. While the drying and demolition is taking place now, returning to a normal life will be a long process for many of those families that have been displaced. We are trying to help lessen their burden by raising funds to supply them with gift cards they can use to rebuild and replace such as for clothing stores, supermarkets and home improvement stores. We debated requesting tangible items, however, the feedback we received is that gift cards would allow them to choose what their families need the most.
We hope that you will help us raise our goal and contribute to our campaign. All of us at MIMS want to THANK YOU! from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity, your interest in our school, its students, staff and teachers.
