Take advantage of $5,000 in matching funds to help bridge a gap for an urban farm in West Philadelphia that offers healthy affordable food, environmental education and civic awareness to a community in need.
Mill Creek Farm has been providing delicious, nutritious affordable produce to the Mill Creek neighborhood in West Philadelphia for ten years. Seniors and WIC recipients can use Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program coupons and low-income SNAP recipients can use ACCESS cards and “Philly Food Bucks”. Community members, children in the neighborhood, and local school groups are welcomed to our operational urban farm, providing opportunities for environmental education and civic-awareness in a community in need.
In 2005, Mill Creek Farm was given access to 1.5 acres of vacant land along the former Mill Creek by the Philadelphia Water Department and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society as part of their storm-water management efforts. Thus began Mill Creek Farm (MCF), a space for people of all ages to come together to learn and build through community. MCF helps to expand access to fresh produce in West Philadelphia by growing vegetables, fruits, and herbs using sustainable practices. The produce is sold affordably to neighborhood residents at farm stands.
This year we made some important changes to be more accountable to our community. We continue to employ a Black farmer and this year our farmer is directly from the Mill Creek neighborhood. We are challenging oppressive power dynamics and designing ones that put those most affected in leadership positions. Planning these changes created a short-fall in our finances and we need your help finish out the rest of the season. Many of us are working hard to raise funds, and are confident that we will get the grants needed for the 2018 growing season, but we need your help to fill this season's gap. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, with your help, we have an opportunity to raise an additional $ 10,000! The donor has reached out to MCF offering to match funds up to $5000, to match funds contributed by new and returning donors before the end of this campaign.
We hope you’ll consider giving what you can. Thank you for any contribution you can make to keep Mill Creek Farm feeding the bodies and souls of the neighborhood.
