The Story

WE'RE ALMOST THERE! Thanks to all of our supporters and the success of our recent offline fundraiser party, we were able to order Mike's FES bike for January 2017 delivery! During December of each year, a new FES bike can be purchased for the same price of a refurbished one. 25% of the cost can be financed at no interest, so we still owe $3800. To understand why Mike needs this piece of prescribed medical equipment, read on....

Over four years ago, Mike Creech was in a tragic accident while fishing near Cave Run Lake. That day, his and his family's world would change dramatically when he broke his neck and became paralyzed from the chest down. Before his accident, he was an artist, photographer, published poet and illustrator, avid outdoorsman, and participated frequently in the local music scene. He and his wife Carrie were also the owners of Flag Fork Herb Farm and The Garden Cafe in Lexington, KY. If you enjoyed the food there or their KY Proud food products, you were eating Mike's creations!

Mike spent a month at UK Hospital and three months at Cardinal Hill Rehabilation Hospital, coming home after that. Through it all, he has shown great character and strength! With determination, faith in God, great surgeons and the help of family and friends, Mike is improving. Feeling and response are slowly returning to his body. Hats off to Mike and Carrie, his dedicated wife!

Currently in a wheelchair, in great spirits, he is able to communicate clearly. He has participated in many research studies and outpatient therapy at Cardinal Hill. However, from his waist down...he is still immobile.  From his waist up he is quite limited and dependent on 24 hour help from others. Movement in his arms and hands is the focus of daily therapy also aimed at keeping his upper body strong enough to balance while sitting. He is able to operate the controls on his motorized wheelchair, feed himself, and even has started back to his art work with the help of a care giver.

What we all see, especially his doctors and therapists, is improvement, even though it is slow.  They have ordered a piece of medical / physical therapy equipment for home use - a "RT300 FES Bike". He has used this bike at Cardinal Hill and has responded well. It uses electrical stimulation to help him move the muscles in his legs. This gives his body an aerobic workout, and also stimulates the nerves in his legs to once again communicate with his brain. It has a computerized program to tell Mike when that is happening, which is greatly encouraging!

This equipment will cost $15,200.00. Unfortunately, it is not covered by Mike's insurance.  The Creech family finances have been stretched to the limit.

That's where YOU AND I come in. We want to give the gift of leg movement to Mike Creech! I have known Mike for 20 years. His doctors have hope and so do I!  We have had one successful fund raiser event for Mike and have already raised $6500.00, but still need the balance of $9,500.00 as of November 2016. ( SEE UPDATED AMOUNT ABOVE ). Any amount you can give will be helpful!
