The Story

Hi. My name is Robin Davidson. I am the oldest niece to my Uncle Mike. Uncle Mike is 68 years old and a Marine veteran. And is the oldest surviving sibling of the Wehrle family. Uncle Mike was recently diagnosed with Base of the Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma. He was given a prognosis of 5 years to live. The cancer he was diagnosed with approximately in early April or so, is quite aggressive. He was scheduled for surgery, to remove half the tongue on May 31st, 2017. He was in the operating room, asleep. The Ear Nose & Throat surgeon did a PET Scan and opted out of surgery for the simple reason the tumor had gotten TOO big. If they had done surgery that day, as the surgeon said, "We would have removed the whole tongue and voice box completely."

He was put into GI surgery the same day and given a feeding tube, which he still currently has. A "G-Tube" to be specific. He has been dealing with Veterans Affairs, but to be honest, what a mess that WHOLE system is in itself.

The Ear Nose and Throat doctor suggested Uncle Mike start Radiation and Chemotherapy. So that is where we are and what starts next week. Radiation therapy is 5 days a week for 7 weeks and Chemotherapy is once in the beginning of his radiation therapy, once in the "middle" of his radiation therapy, and a round of chemotherapy in the end of the 7 weeks of radiation therapy.  Radiation therapy for Uncle Mike, starts 6/12/2017 and his chemotherapy starts 6/13/2017.

Uncle Mike is currently taking and prescribed 21-25 medications (including 3 tube feedings a day of 2 cans of nutrition supplement at a time). The medications are taking away his livelihood. And taking away his personality slowly. We are currently looking into alternative medicine, that could either make his quality of life, while he is still here, much better. Or, as anyone would hope, to extend his life, or even shrink his tumor.

Hey.. we can all hope.

It already has been a rough road for my Uncle. I would do ANYTHING to take it away from him. The only thing I could think of, was starting a crowdfunding page for him. JUST for him, and his extra-expenses.. such as gas to and from chemotherapy and his radiation therapy appointments, as well as his appointments at the VA Medical Center in Baltimore. We all (my mom, my uncle Mike, and myself, as well as my b/f) live in Waldorf. Anyone that currently knows and is familiar with the Department of Veterans Affairs (and lives around the DMV area) will tell you that the only VA medical centers around are Washington D.C. and Baltimore, MD. He has chosen the Baltimore, MD VA Medical Center as his "home hospital". That is where all his records are. BUT, Chemotherapy is going to be done Brandywine, and radiation therapy is going to take place in Clinton, MD. Funds would also be towards medical supplies such as all sorts of sanitizers and stuff to keep Uncle Mike safe from everyday germs around him and the household. He will also need EXTRA care, because the VA only provides a certain amount of care, and after that, they are out of money. I am truly disgusted with the way the veterans of here and now, and past and future veterans are and will be treated. They deserve so much more respect from the government, than they get now.

Anyways, I am asking, from the bottom of my heart, if you cannot donate, PLEASE SHARE this YOUCARING page. Anything can and will help. Whether it is $0.50 or $5.00... ANYTHING CAN AND WILL always MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I am deeply sorry it has taking me so long to post an update, I have had a lot to deal with in the past month or so. I was on my way home on August 9th, 2017 and someone hit me in my car, and my car was unfortunately totaled. I have been handling the injuries that came a long with the accident, plus insurance and such.

Enough about myself though. As you can see, Mike (in the picture that I am posting with this update) that Uncle Mike was ready for the Eclipse on August 21st, 2017. Even though he could not really see much of the Eclipse, I got him an OFFICIAL pair of eclipse glasses for him.

Uncle Mike is going on his third week of chemotherapy AND radiation. He is dealing with it, but as with anyone on Chemotherapy and Radiation, it can really screw up some of your blood levels of certain things like Sodium and dehydration. Uncle /mike's sodium levels seem to go up and down whenever he gets fluids if he gets dehydrated, he NEEDS fluids. He is at the Baltimore VA Medical Center in Baltimore, MD having his chemotherapy treatments and radiation treatment up at the VA Medical Center, since he does get dehydrated and his sodium levels go off the charts AT LEAST once or twice a week. They are keeping an eye on him and he will remain up at the Baltimore VA Medical Center for at least 5 more weeks to finish his chemotherapy and radiation.

Please continue to keep Uncle Mike in your good thoughts and prayers. They seem to be working! -RD

As promised everyone, I would update with the GOOD and the bad news. I come to you all today with great news. They removed the breathing tube from Uncle Mike and took Uncle Mike of the respirator. He is doing just fine. Cussing up a storm, and telling everyone to "Shut Up, and Get Out!". To be honest.. It was great to hear him say that, considering the Main picture on this campaign, was taken just 2 days ago. I am happy to hear him say ANYTHING AT ALL!!! :) Thanks for all the prayers! -RD
