The Story

Wednesday, May 20, 2015 after visiting the doctor for a migraine, Mike learned that he has a glioblastoma, a rare and highly aggressive form of cancer.  Mike was rushed into emergency surgery, the doctors did everything they could surgically, but his primary tumor is inoperable.  Mike has undergone radiation, and while involved in a clinical trial at Fred Hutch/UW underwent a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy.  He is now looking into additional therapies. This process is mentally, physically, and emotionally grueling, but this has not stopped Mike’s unconquerable spirit and positive outlook.

If you worked with Mike on Shadow of Mordor, Gears of War I and II, Fable, Media Center, Zune, Conker, or Perfect Dark Zero you have experienced his positive energy, passion, and unfailing support.  Mike has always been the first to volunteer, getting in earliest in the day and the last to leave at night.  You know that he’s always been there when you needed him.

Now Mike needs you.

Mike and April have three beautiful children, each amazing in their own way, smart, talented, and compassionate.   Mike needs to know that his family will be ok, and that you stand beside him in this fight.  Your donation will help cover the medical expenses and securing the future for Mike’s children.

Mike's friends helped him make his dream a reality and now they're sharing it with the world. An excerpt of the story:

"When Mike was diagnosed with cancer in May 2015, one of his goals was to get this album finished and heard. He knew that he didn't have much time, so he passed the baton to producer/multi-instrumentalist/genius Nathan Grigg, who took the songs we recorded in Mike's basement in 2008 and turned Mike's vision into reality (so Mike could focus on time with his family and trying every treatment available to him).

Dayna Smith was enlisted to contribute backing vocals. One of the most beautiful moments of this album comes when Mike's daughter Bridget, who was just a rug-rat when these songs were first born, adds her voice in harmony with her father. Touching, haunting, and beautiful."

All proceeds from the album will be going to Mike's family.

When Sheryl Sandberg recently lost her husband she wrote:
"I have learned how ephemeral everything can feel—and maybe everything is. That whatever rug you are standing on can be pulled right out from under you with absolutely no warning. In the last thirty days, I have heard from too many women who lost a spouse and then had multiple rugs pulled out from under them. Some lack support networks and struggle alone as they face emotional distress and financial insecurity. It seems so wrong to me that we abandon these women and their families when they are in greatest need."

Your support has been unbelievable during this difficult time.  Some of you have asked if there is something else you can do. If you haven't yet shared your story, please go here on Facebook:  Help Mike Forgey Fight Cancer (https://www.facebook.com/help4G/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel) and do so now. If you have any more to donate or can help get the word out, please continue to direct people to this site.  All proceeds will be going to April and the children to help support them during this difficult time.

In addition to the funds on this page, we have received some donations from Mike's game industry family. They wanted to help provide additional funds for Mike's family so we will be putting together an online auction. All of the proceeds go directly to April and the children. We are still collecting the donations and will update you when we have more.

Thank you again for all of your support

Mike had a wonderful holiday season with his family.
Since then, he's had some complications that have required hospitalization. The doctors are monitoring his recovery closely, and Mike hopes to be home soon.
The good news is that his recent MRI has shown a 15-20% reduction in the tumor. Everyone's donations, stories, and support have made an impact on Mike and his family. Thank you and please continue to help in any way that you are able.

Great news!  Mike's story has been picked up by the local TV media.  Komo News 4 did an interview with Forgey yesterday.  It will air tonight, December 24 at 5pm.  Please tune in and watch!  Thank you for all your support and well wishes, Happy Holidays!

Mike is trying a new treatment that involves wearing a device on your head that stops the growth of the tumor. It's called a Optune cap, and it needs to
be worn on the head around-the-clock. The device sends painless electronic signals to the brain in order to stop cancer cells from spreading or dividing. This cap has been showing promise in recent studies and it's something Mike will be starting to wear today! The challenge is that the cap is 21k per month and it looked like Mike was going to have to fully cover the costs. Fortunately he didn't have to worry thanks to your contributions. Then yesterday insurance finally came through for this one. Thank you for all of your contributions and for sharing the story. Your help is going to allow Mike to continue his fight and we can't thank you enough. We hope you enjoy this wonderful holiday season and please continue to share Mike's story as he continues his fight!
