This year, Laine Soriano and I, Micah Castelo, are the recipients of the Davis Projects for Peace grant. We were given $10,000 to start a grassroots peace project. However, we need more in order to successfully complete this project.
The project that we chose to do is to construct the first official library in Caibiran, a small town located in the eastern Visayas region of the Philippines.
This town faced destruction in 2013 after Typhoon Haiyan hit it. Since then, the community has been working to reestablish its village. However, the loss from the typhoon still resonates with the community, especially the children, today. We hope that by constructing a library with access to books and laptops, the people of Caibiran will experience a new, regained hope and focus their energy on learning. The library will provide Caibiran residents with access to new tools for success, offer entertainment through reading and educational computer games, and unite the members of the community in building a source of joy and knowledge for all. We need your help! Any kinds of donations (books, supplies, money, etc.) are needed and appreciated!Logistics
We need your help to raise funds to build this library. We have $10,000 but our goal is to raise $16,000 in order to successfully complete this project. Please help us build this library! All funds will go into this project. This includes purchasing materials for the library (building materials, furniture, books, school supplies, a computer), wages to pay local workers, food and transportation for volunteers, and travel fees for Laine and I. Laine and I will be in the Philippines from August 5
to August 26
, but we would like to start the renovation as soon as possible.
Due to some problems, we are no longer working with St. James the Apostle Church and Caibiran Central School. We are working with the Ponferrada family (Caibiran natives who are very involved in volunteer work), MYSA Builders and Enterprises (our contractor), the Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of Caibiran, and the Caibiran Association of Retirees (library volunteers).
If you have any questions/concerns/suggestions, please contact us at [email protected]
or [email protected]
SPREAD THE WORD! Objectives
1. Establish an official library in Caibiran (We are renovating a run-down, yet functional building donated to us by the Ponferrada family)
2. Provide new educational resources and activities to Caibiran residents affected by Typhoon Haiyan
3. Engage the community in a project that benefits all village members, especially the youth
4. Encourage families to get involved in the youth's education
5. Give the villagers hope to move forward after the destruction in their community
We hope that a library will bring a sense of joy and thirst for knowledge to the residents of Caibiran. Many are still dealing with Haiyan's effects. Having a library can give them the time, place, and resources they need and dream of to participate in various recreational activities such as reading and writing. Also, we believe that a library can advance literacy in Caibiran and encourage other schools and local governments in starting fundraising efforts to improve the quality of libraries or establish them in surrounding areas. Lastly, we hope that community relations will be stronger after working together on a project that benefits everyone.
