The Story

With Stephanie and Michael's blessing, we are raising money to plant trees in memory of Baby Sophia Mina Kuestermann - Princess Warrior.

Sophia fought so hard with her enormous spirit when she was born early at 28 weeks on October 5th, 2013.  On December 31st, she passed away in the arms of her mom and dad free of all the tubes and surrounded with love.  Many of you followed what was happening with her daily on Sophia's page on CaringBridge.  Through all of the prayers, love and support that we sent to Seattle, we all became Sophia's Army.

We would like to give Stephanie and Michael a place to go to remember, honor and celebrate the life of Sophia - a place of life and beauty and strength.  We have chosen three locations where trees will be planted.  We will endow a legacy tree in Ravenna Park in Seattle close to their apartment.  A second tree will be planted in Cabin John Park in Bethesda, MD.  Stephanie grew up playing in this park and currently her nieces play there now.  The last tree will be planted in a park in NYC.  We are currently working with the Parks Department and are trying to get them to say yes to a tree in Gantry Park in Long Island City, but politics might have us planting it in a different location.  I will keep you updated.

Please share this fundraiser and let us provide a beautiful place where Sophia's brave parents, family and friends can go and honor her life.  Please continue to follow Sophia's story online at

Dear Friends

A warm and heartfelt THANK YOU for helping make the Trees for Sophia project a reality.  I feel so proud to say we reached the goal of providing trees in 3 cities.  These trees will be a beautiful and peaceful place of life where Sophia's parents, her family and friends can remember and honor her spirit.  I am happy to say that we also will be planting roses in the community garden in Gantry Park which is near where Stephanie lived in NYC.  Any donations that go above the amount needed will be forwarded to Sophia's Fund at Children's Hospital in Seattle.

Thank you not only for your donations but also for many of you who participated in the social media push by sharing the link and changing your profile pics on Facebook.  Thank you to the people who donated who did not know Stephanie or Michael, but who nonetheless were touched by the strength of Sophia's spirit.  And a special thank you to Mike Caffrey and Zara Ahmad-Post who helped put together the beautiful video of Sophia Mina on the YouCaring site.

Please continue to follow Sophia's story at

I will post on FB when more info on the trees become a reality.  In the next few weeks, I will be working with the different parks departments to choose locations and trees.  You can add me as a friend if you would like to follow along.  My email address on FB is [email protected]

Likewise, you can add me on Instagram where I will use the tag #treesforsophia (and I hope you do too if you visit a tree) when the trees and roses are planted.  My Instagram name is Pondblue.

I hope this finds you all happy, healthy and warm.  Thank you again.

Just received a cash donation so I have updated the total to reflect that.  We only have about $700 left to raise.  We can do it!
