Zeus is a gorgeous 94 pound Great Pyrenees mix. He's a young boy, estimated to be 2 years old. He was turned in to a high kill rate shelter and was out of time when we met him. Our volunteer saw that he wasn't using his back leg and knew he'd need extra help to escape the shelter.
A FOR volunteer home offered to host him and FOR scheduled a vet appointment immediately. A specialist was recommended, so Zeus saw Dr. Newman at Veterinary Regional Referral Hospital http://vrrh.org/meet-our-veterinarians/
Dr. Newman has recommended TPLO surgery (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) and patiently explained the need for surgery and procedure to the FOR board and foster mom.
The surgery is expected to cost $3500 to $4000. We feel we don't have an option -- Zeus now needs pain medication to be comfortable and is disabled as he is. In the future, if he were to have difficulties with the other back leg - he'd be out of options. As such a large dog, he needs this surgery for a good quality of life.
Carol, his foster mom, has committed to seeing Zeus through the rehab and recover. We couldn't do this without her help!! Dr. Newman expects a full recovery -- Zeus is young and healthy. Also, Dr. Newman is very experienced with this surgery.
So the decision has been made :). We now hope to raise half of Zeus's surgical expense with the help of our contributors, so our goal is set at $1800. Contributions will allow us to continue rescuing animals at our current rate while still providing life changing surgeries, like this TPLO for Zeus.
Thank you for reading and caring about FOR's rescued animals. We treat each one as we would one of our personal pets. We never know exactly what to expect when an animal leaves the shelter with us but we are always able to have a positive impact -- thanks to your hard work, support, and encouragement.
