The Story

Zeus is a gorgeous 94 pound Great Pyrenees mix.  He's a young boy, estimated to be 2 years old.  He was turned in to a high kill rate shelter and was out of time when we met him.  Our volunteer saw that he wasn't using his back leg and knew he'd need extra help to escape the shelter.

A FOR volunteer home offered to host him and FOR scheduled a vet appointment immediately.  A specialist was recommended, so Zeus saw Dr. Newman at Veterinary Regional Referral Hospital http://vrrh.org/meet-our-veterinarians/Dr. Newman has recommended TPLO surgery (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) and patiently explained the need for surgery and procedure to the FOR board and foster mom.

The surgery is expected to cost $3500 to $4000.  We feel we don't have an option -- Zeus now needs pain medication to be comfortable and is disabled as he is.  In the future, if he were to have difficulties with the other back leg - he'd be out of options.  As such a large dog, he needs this surgery for a good quality of life.

Carol, his foster mom, has committed to seeing Zeus through the rehab and recover.  We couldn't do this without her help!!  Dr. Newman expects a full recovery -- Zeus is young and healthy.  Also, Dr. Newman is very experienced with this surgery.

So the decision has been made :).  We now hope to raise half of Zeus's surgical expense with the help of our contributors, so our goal is set at $1800.  Contributions will allow us to continue rescuing animals at our current rate while still providing life changing  surgeries, like this TPLO for Zeus.

Thank you for reading and caring about FOR's rescued animals.  We treat each one as we would one of our personal pets.  We never know exactly what to expect when an animal leaves the shelter with us but we are always able to have a positive impact -- thanks to your hard work, support, and encouragement.

Fundraiser Updates

Carol, his foster mom, updated us last night on his progress.  He has very strict rules from Dr. Newman and Zeus is having a hard time understanding!  He has to be crated all the time for two weeks with only three potty breaks a day.  After two weeks, he'll be allowed limited house activity and very short walks.  After that, his activity will be controlled for six months.

This is tough for a 94 pound Great Pyr kid :).  Carol is doing all she can to help him.  His crate is positioned where he can be a part of all the family activity.  At night, he's in the master bathroom so he's still sleeping near his foster mom (he let it be known that this was NOT negotiable).  And Carol is cooking special meals for him to make life more interesting.

He's the kind of guy who wants to please, so he's cooperating as well as he can.

You'll notice we adjusted Zeus's fund goal to $2600, the cost of his surgery.  The original estimate of $3500 to $4000 was too big a number to even type!  FOR is a small rescue, surviving entirely off donations.  We immediately starting discussing rummage sales and fundraisers -- whatever it takes to get Zeus what he needs.

Thankfully, our kind supporters have helped us out!!  We're very grateful and now hope we will actually reach his goal of $2600.  With Seymour waiting for heartworm treatment and Allie the boxer coming in - also heartworm positive, the effort is ongoing.  We keep moving forward, helping as many as we can afford. ;)

Zeus came through surgery well!!  He's now home with Carol, starting his slow recovery.  He'll need very limited exercise and close monitoring for up to six months.  His foster family is experienced with large dogs as well as livestock, so they are the perfect place for him right now.  Carol says Zeus is a chilll kind of dog who loves to play but is content to sleep near her - so she thinks he'll handled the limited exercise very well.

The other good news is that the Veterinary Regional Referral Hospital gave FOR a generous discount - to day, Zeus's total is $2600.  This is much better than we expected and we appreciate their generosity.

And a moment of truth. FOR has helped so many animals in 2013 who had extensive surgical or treatment needs that we are going to need to step up our fundraising efforts. Your support of Zeus will be appreciated even more now than ever.  We love helping animals in need of surgery - and to continue that, we'll have to spend more time on fundraising.  Not anyone's favorite thing to do - but very necessary to keep helping these little ones.

Thank you for reading and opening your heart to animals like Zeus.  They don't deserve to be invisible in a shelter and they don't deserve to live in pain.  FOR supporters are the best and we are SO grateful.

Zeus is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday.  If all goes well, he'll stay overnight, then go home with foster mom, Carol.  He'll have very specific restrictions for weeks so Carol will have her work cut out for her, keeping this happy guy under her thumb.  She's up for it - she's experienced with Great Pyrs as well as a farm full of animals!  Also, Zeus is a calm boy - not overly active.  Wednesday is the big day.
