The Story

On his 28th birthday this past December 14th, one of my oldest and closest friends, Jacob Bruggman (pictured here, to my right), was officially diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer which attacks the immune system via the lymph nodes. Unfortunately, this is a tragic misstep on Cancer's part, as Jake has no intention of spending the rest of his life with her.

Jake is a local Seattle musician, exceptional vegetarian cook, lover of postmodern literature and a full-time sexy beast, so it's perfectly understandable to me why Cancer would want to get deep within him and never let go. Hell, ask any of Jake's friends and acquaintances (female or otherwise) and they will doubtlessly tell you they've either been shut down or had to stop themselves from trying the same thing on more than one occasion. But the hard truth is that where his personal biological functions are concerned, Jake is a decidedly staunch conservative - he just will not abide any parasitic freeloaders at the cellular level.

According to a 2011 study by Duke University, the average patient's out-of-pocket expenses for cancer care run about $1,266, even with insurance. Jake's chemotherapy treatment is tentatively expected to run about six months, during which he'll be living on disability at a reduced income. In an effort to be prepared for any unforeseen additional costs (such as hospital stays should he contract further illness as a result of his weakened immune system), we're hoping to raise $15,000 in order to help him make ends meet. Any surplus remaining after the cost of his treatment and supplemental living expenses will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphona Society.

This page will be continually updated as more information about Jake's condition and expected treatment is made available.

I'd like to extend my sincere thanks in advance to each charitable soul for anything they're able to contribute to The Foundation For A Better Jake. This man, with his dark sense of humor, emotional and intellectual insights and impeccable taste in music is very important to me, and very probably to every other person able to overcome the passionate jealously his raw sexuality and keen intellect rightfully induces.

Resharing this page across your various social media accounts is essential to helping us meet our goal. Whether you're able to donate or not, we very much appreciate any exposure you're able to bring to our cause.

Let's all pitch in to help Jake sleep with Cancer and never call her back.

Fundraiser Updates

Hello all you lovely, lovely humans. My dear friend and now-infamous perpetrator of countless cancer cell holocausts, Jacob Bruggman, is at this point well over halfway through his originally scheduled chemotherapy treatments, and he had the following update to share today via his personal Facebook account:

"As a number of you know, today was the day I got a status update on how I'm responding to treatment. It's easier to update all of you this way, so I apologize for it being a bit impersonal. The cancer in my torso has responded well to treatment. So that's the good news. The cancer in my shoulders and neck is being a bit more stubborn. We'll continue the chemotherapy for the next three rounds, then re-evaluate to see if another method is necessary. Thank you again for all the support through this process."

The post in question was subsequently the recipient of numerous (albiet bittersweetly gifted) "likes" along with a handful of comments attempting to express solidarity in an irreverantly humorous manner, to which in turn Jake graciously responded with "likes" of his own.

In summary; while positive results have indeed been attained, there is still further mass cellicide to be revelously committed in the preservation of Jacob's gifted mind and aesthetically sublime body. So feel free to visit and offer your continued monetary support to our ongoing campaign of cellularly-discriminate slaughter.

Last Wednesday's benefit show was a smashing success; all told, The Good Wives were able to raise over $2,000 at The Crocodile's door, with well over 150 persons in attendance. Jake was pretty overwhelmed with the turnout from friends and acquaintences and who came from all over Washington state alongside Seattlites to lend their ears (and their wallets) in support. With press coverage from Seattle Weekly, The Stranger, KEXP, Inside Right Wrist, The Seattle Times and performances by Michael Lerner of Telekinesis and Blackheart Honeymoon; The Emerald City reminded itself what communities are really for.

The following Friday, Jake underwent his second chemotherapy treatment, which he thus far appears to have taken in stride.

Check out some of the brilliant shots taken that night by Casey Cosley of Snap & Capture Photography.

If You Stage It, They Will Come (And Donate)

ATTENTION SEATTLITES: Jake's band, The Good Wives, are putting on a benefit show next Wednesday, January 23rd @8pm at none other than the legendary Crocodile where luminaries such as Neutral Milk Hotel, R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr., and Cheap Trick have come before them (get tickets here). They've got Michael Benjamin Lerner of Telekinesis lined up to play a solo set and of course, Jake and The Good Wives will perform in what is likely to be their last show for the remainder of Jake's chemo treatment.

So come, raise your glasses (whilst simultaneously dropping your cash) in this communal celebration of life, love, and everlasting contempt for cancer, cancer's children, and its children's children, and its children's children's children.
