The Story

Gene Augustin has pancreatic cancer and needs your help.

On January 22, 2013, after a week of investigative procedures at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Gene was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma (pancreatic cancer) at the head of the pancreas. This diagnosis was both shocking and devastating as Gene has been in excellent health his entire life and is very physically fit.

However there is some good news...
Because the cancer appears to be early stage, Gene was selected to participate in a clinical research trial to determine whether a new treatment is effective in controlling cancer growth.  Gene must fly to Boston each week for his treatments at MGH. (Read Gene's Blog at
TEAM GENE CHRONICLES for more details and updates.)
Because of the extensive costs associated with traveling to Boston for treatments, along with other uncovered medical expenses and the loss of work while away, we are asking for donations.

We know Gene has a long, difficult road ahead of him, and we are trying to do everything we can to support him and keep him physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. Our hope is that Gene's optimism and overall good health will help him prevail against this killer disease.

Gene has given to all of us in his lifetime from scoutmaster, teacher, inventor, father, grandfather, swim coach, captain, to pancake chef and business owner. Please stand with us in our battle against cancer by giving today.

By donating to TEAM GENE CANCER FUND 100% of your donation will go towards expenses for Gene's medical treatment and recovery.

If you prefer to give by check, please make payable to Gene Augustin and mail to:

Gene is home in Orlando recovering well after Whipple Surgery.  He started his 6 cycles of chemotherapy on April 22,2013.  Each cycle consists of a weekly chemotherapy treatment for 3 weeks followed by 1 week of rest.  After one full couse he seems to be tolerating it with only mild symptoms of abdominal pain, fatigue and loss of appetite.  He is gaining strength, swimming as often as he can with his fellow lake swimmers.

Thanks for all your continued support and prayers.

Gene's surgery on March 8th went well. The tumor was removed and after a 3 day hospital stay he was discharged on Day 4, well below the average stay for a Whipple Procedure. Today is Recovery Day 6 and he is doing well, recouperating at his "home-away-from-home" in Boston.  Like in the hospital, he is interrupted every couple hours and encouraged to take fluids, food, pain killers, and walks.  All systems are “go” and Genes digestive system is awake and learning how to accommodate with fewer parts.

Thank you for all your love, prayers, and support.  Combining donations received on this site with those sent directly to the Team Gene Fundraiser address, we are at 81% of goal!
