As many in the community are aware, on November 24, 2013, the lives of the Patterson family were changed forever when their vehicle was struck by a vehicle driven by Muhammad Baqir. Mr. Baqir was driving while impaired and under the influence of illicit drugs and hit the Patterson Family's vehicle head-on, killing Meagen Patterson and seriously injuring her husband, Lance, and their three children, Justin (14), Olivia (10) and Sophia (2).
The road to recovery, both physically and mentally, for the survivors of this horrific crash is a long one and we would like to take this opportunity to update the public on the conditions of Lance, Justin, Olivia and Sophia.
Lance suffered serious injuries from the collision, including multiple broken bones and fractures, and remains hospitalized while undergoing rehabilitation for those injuries. Justin has undergone several surgeries and but was released from the hospital several days after the accident. Unfortunately, due to complications from his injuries, Justin is now back in the hospital and being treated for those complications. Olivia remains in critical condition in the Pediatric ICU. She sustained serious damage to her abdomen and spine and is paralyzed from the waist down. It is unknown at this time whether or not she will regain any feeling in the lower half of her body. She has endured numerous surgeries, on what seems like an almost daily basis, and will undergo several more surgeries in the near future. Sophia sustained a broken arm and a laceration above her eye, and has been released from the hospital into the care of extended family members.
As you can imagine, the financial burden of this tragedy is overwhelming, and the magnitude of this burden grows by day, with medical expenses piling up and no income to offset expenses. Once Olivia has healed to the point of release from the hospital, the Patterson Family will face the additional financial and emotional challenges of caring for a child who will require specialized medical and personal care.
There is a great need for financial support to cover current living expenses and, with holidays just around the corner, there is also a desire to provide gifts for the children. Nothing can take away the pain of the family's physical injuries, and nothing can bring back the incredible wife and mother that they lost that day. However, we can honor Meagen's memory by continuing to come together as a community to support her family as they struggle to pick up the pieces. As all who knew her can attest to, Meagen would do anything for anyone, and she was always the first to offer a helping hand to those in need.
The generosity that has been extended by the public thus far has been overwhelming and the family is so thankful for the support. Unfortunately, this tragedy is far from over, and it is our hope that this update will convey to the community the depth of need that still exists. Please keep the Patterson Family in your thoughts and prayers this holiday season, and continue to give and share whatever amount you are able, to assist the family in getting through these most difficult days.
A trust has been established for the benefit of the Patterson Family and all monetary contributions will be deposited into the Trust and be used to cover the needs of the Patterson Family in covering medical and livinand g expenses.
