Hello! My name is Valerie Maupin. I am 24 years old and currently living in San Diego California. I am just your normal person. I work as a barber at Floyd's 99 Barbershop. I attend college at National University. I am majoring in Nursing with a minor in Psychology. I am a motorcycle and tattoo enthusiast. I am a big believer in helping others whenever able and that moral brought me to the place I am today.
I became interested in becoming a Living Kidney Donor when someone close to my best friend became in need of a kidney. I was not even a blood type match for that woman. I then began to think, "If i am willing to do this process for someone I know, why wouldn't I do it for someone I don't know? Everyone deserves the equal oppertunity to have a normal, healthy life." That thought led me to a Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/FindAKidneyCentral). Then through a series of clicks and scrolls I ended up at Christine Curti's page. She is "The One". I messaged her and that is where the communication began.
Christine has a huge story of her own on what she has had to undergo and the sacrifices she has had to make due to her medical condtion. I will upload it to this page soon as well as a link to her donation page.
Christine lives in Florida so I have had to go Florida to undergo extensive medical testing (EKG, Ulrtasound, Xray, Bloodwork, C/T Scan...). The results came back and our case was presented to the medical board. My kidney was accepted for donation to Christine! We received the results October 1, 2013. We have scheduled the surgery for Novemeber 13 out in Gainseville Florida. The surgeon told me to prepare to be out of work for 3 months.
The medical portion of this process is covered by Christine's insurance. The flight and hotel out to Florida are covered by NLDAC (National Living Donor Assistance Center). I am NOT being compinsated for this procedure. I am still responsible for my bills (rent, insurance, student loans, food...) even though I will be out of work for several weeks. I am seeking donations to help keep me afloat during my surgical recovery time since I am unable to work. Anything will help and be greatly appreciated. I am NOT looking to make any profit from this. I just do not want to be worried about how I am going to pay my bills. I want to be focused solely on recovering and getting back to a normal life.
